The current use of remote control devices as search and rescue devices during the 911 disaster emphasizes the recent level of development these devices have achieved. Remote control devices used for reconnaissance and as offensive weapons during the War in Iraq further punctuate the depth to which they have been incorporated into 1st world infrastructure. All large metropolitan police departments now have remote controlled bomb disarmament and disposal devices used to limit human exposure to explosive devices. In 2000 television popularized remote controlled devices by engaging them in competitions called ROBOT WARS.
