We raised
turkeys the year before Michael was born. Kenneth would
play with the toms like they were other children. When
they would strut their tails would be higher than
Kenneth's head. They were lots of trouble to raise but we
enjoyed it. We also made a good bit of money from them.
On foot they sold for fifty cents a pound. We sold some
dressed ones to the Wayside Inn, which was the finest
eating place in Greer. We got $25.00 for the last one I
carried up there just a short while before Michael was
born in 1952. Believe me $25.00 was money in 1952!! There
is a reason I remember this time so well. We had gone to
the Wayside Inn to deliver the turkey. When Jimmy backed
up to leave he backed into a hole. He had to walk over to
the Chevrolet place to get a wrecker to pull us out! I
stayed in the car. I was too embarrassed to get out and
me as big as a cow. Girls didn't display their pregnant
bodies then like they do now. Pregnant girls stayed at
home unless they had to get out. I like it much better
today where girls are proud of being expectant mothers.
Anyway, that day I had to take the turkey up there, for
Jimmy would never have done anything like that! Copyright ©1990 by Piedmont Endeavors, Inc. All rights reserved. Printed in the United States of America. No part of these stories may be reproduced by any means electronic or otherwise without the prior approval of the author. |
