Z1 Leberecht Maß

October 15, 1934-The keel of the Z1 Leberecht Maß is laid down in Deutsche Werke shipyard in Kiel (Germany).

August 18, 1935-The Leberecht Maß is launched.

December 1936-The Leberecht Maß undergoes boiler and machinery trials in the Deutsche Werke shipyards.

January 14, 1937-The Leberecht Maß is commissioned, becoming the first German destroyer completed after World War I. After being commissioned, Z1 heads for Swinemünde. The next couple of years are spent in various training exercises.

February 1, 1937-The Leberecht Maß joins Destroyer Division 1.

May 1, 1937-The Leberecht Maß was named as Führur der Torpedobootes (Commander of the Torpedo Boats), which was the title given to the commander of destroyers.

March 23, 1939-The Leberecht Maß was ordered to return the refugees from Memel into Lithuania after Germany ordered the repeal of the Memel Statute, arriving on May 24.

September 1, 1939-The Leberecht Maß is in the Baltic Sea at the outbreak of World War II.

September 3, 1939-Z1 Leberecht Maß and Z9 Wolfgang Zenker attack the Polish destroyer Wicher and minelayer Gryf in Gdigen. During the attack, Leberecht Maß is damaged by a 15 cm hit from shore batteries at Hela shortly before 7 a.m. The destroyer briefly offloads the wounded to the hospital ship Berlin, and a couple of days later is heading for Swinemünde.

September 10, 1939-The Leberecht Maß enters drydock at Swinemünde.

September 20, 1939-Z1 Leberecht Maß , Z6 Theodore Reidel, Z7 Hermann Schoemann, Z8 Bruno Heinemann add to the 'Westwall' in the Skagarrak.

February 22, 1940-The Leberecht Maß takes part Operation Wikinger. At 7 p.m., the destroyers form a line ahead formation, with Leberecht Maß bringing up the rear. At 7:13 p.m, the destroyers are overflown by several twin engine aircraft. The destroyer’s lookout reports it as a positive friendly aircraft, while another destroyer spotted it as a definite enemy aircraft. When the aircraft returned five minutes later, the destroyers opened fire with their anti-aircraft guns. Aircraft are again spotted at 7:43 p.m, and this time, the aircraft bomb the destroyers. Leberecht Maß is hit between the bridge and forward funnel. Z16 Frederick Eckoldt pulls up alongside to survey the damage, but cannot see any damage. Towing gear is readied, but the group is again attacked by Heinkel He-111’s. The damaged destroyer is struck again, this time in the aft funnel. The second hit was enough to sink the destroyer, and the 56 survivors were picked up by Z16 Frederick Eckoldt.
