Oklahoma

October 26, 1912-The keel of the Oklahoma is laid in Camden, New Jersey.

March 23, 1914-The Oklahoma is launched.

May 2, 1916-The Oklahoma is commissioned and joins the Atlantic Fleet for two years of training on the East Coast.

August 13, 1918-The Oklahoma and Nevada embark on European convoy protection duties.

August 23, 1918-Oklahoma leaves to escort President Woodrow Wilson aboard the George Washington, bound for the Paris Peace Conference.

December 14, 1918-Oklahoma returns to New York after the safe arrival of the George Washington.

June 15, 1919-Oklahoma returns to Brest (France) escort the President back to the United States, ordered to New York.

July 8, 1919-Oklahoma arrives in New York. The battleship then joins the Atlantic Fleet.

1921-Oklahoma joins the Pacific Fleet for combined fleet operations and then departs to celebrate the Peruvian Centennial. Returning to again join the Pacific Fleet, remaining for six years.

1925-Oklahoma embarks on a cruise of the United States Navy Battle Fleet, bound for New Zealand and Australia.

1927-Oklahoma joins the Scout Fleet early in the year and begins training exercises and midshipman training cruises

September 1927-Modernizations on the Oklahoma are started.

July 1929-Oklahoma returns to active service as the modernizations are completed. The ship then embarks to join the Scouting Fleet in the Caribbean Sea.

June 1930-Oklahoma begins six years of fleet operations throughout the West Coast, including several training cruises, one of which was to several of Europes northern port cities, during which time the Spanish Civil War began.

July 24, 1936-Oklahoma is ordered to Bilbao to rescue stranded American citizens with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, interrupting the midshipman cruise of Europe. These citizens were carried to nearby ports including Gibralter and Brest, among other French cities. From there, the citizens were returned to the United States by other naval vessels.

September 11, 1936-Oklahoma arrives in Norfolk and is ordered to rejoin the Pacific Fleet.

October 24, 1936-Oklahoma joins the Pacific Fleet for four years of training operations and Army/Navy operations.

December 6, 1940-Oklahoma enters Pearl Harbor, where the battleship will engage in drills and training operations, as well as conducting patrols for one year.

December 7, 1941-Oklahoma, docked in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack, second row, alongside the battleship Maryland, and also part of the well-known "Battleship Row." The battleship took 5 torpedo shots and rolled over, the mast touching the bottom of the harbor and the ships keel is exposed. Julio DeCastro and 32 are rescued from the bottom of the ship, while many others run to the nearby Maryland to man guns aboard the ship.

March 1943-Salvage work on the Oklahoma begins.

December 28, 1943-Oklahoma is moved to drydock.

September 1, 1944-Oklahoma is decommissioned, when the ships guns and superstructure are removed.

December 5, 1946-Oklahoma is sold to Moore Drydocking Company in Oakland, California, then, over a year later is taken under tow, bound for San Francisco.

May 17, 1947-Oklahoma breaks the tow line and sinks, just 540 miles from Pearl Harbor.
