Music. Music speaks to the soul. It speaks in a way that no other medium can.
Music has always been a powerful force in my life. A powerful influence.
I grew up listening to the top 40 pop music of the 80's, and my musical taste has
evolved quite a bit from where I started. As I got into junior high I started testing the
waters of some other genres. Rap music being the biggest factor at the time. That's when I started
my analysis of lyrics. Breaking down songs, and looking for meanings and what-have-you.
Early on in high school I started listening to classic rock. The music and poetry
of Jimi Hendrix quickly became my favorite. When I was a senior in high school,
I became intrigued by the music of Pink Floyd. This was by far the most amazing music
I had heard in my life. I became a total Floydian, and learned everything about
the band and it's history while gathering all their recordings. This band was
without a doubt the biggest musical influence on me to that point.
Shorty after I graduated high school, I heard a song on the radio. Peter Gabriel's
In Your Eyes. This song took me right back to the nostalgia of the 80's.
I fell in love with the it again instantly, and ran out to buy the album.
This one would completely change my life. The name of the album was "So".
Nine tracks, from beginning to end, and nothing short of a masterpiece.
This all came during one of the most difficult times of my life.
PG's music along with many others, helped me through this period, and continues to inspire me and bring me
hope to this day.
My interest in the music of Mr. Gabriel, and his interest in world music has led me
to venture into the relms or world music myself. I'm still getting my feet wet in this genre,
and this could be the most challenging one of all. :)
