          Writing Activities

(For Comic Strip Writing:

Directions: Choose one activity per day for writing. Use the journal ideas for daily journal writing.  For activity 3, remember to base essay on "The Annie Auditions" , to order: ABC.com (Turning
Point-Feb. 16, 1997)

Online Activity: Go to The Century.com, click on various "time capsules", and
                                    write a summary about a topic of your choice. Franklin Delano
                                    Roosevelt's famous wife, Eleanor, is featured in one of them!

Activity 1: Look at copies of Stagebill  from various plays, as well as the adbooks
                   from some High School plays we have at the Writing Center.  For this
                   week, create your own adbook.  These are the components you will need:
 

Activity 2:  Write a "Fan Letter" to any star in "Annie" that you choose. Ask
    "Who, What, Where, When, and Why" questions. Tell something about
    yourself, too!  Use the format in your World of Language book for "Friendly
    letters.

Activity 3:  After watching the "Annie Auditions", write an expository essay about
     3 things you need to be able to do to have your best chance at passing an
     audition for Broadway.

Activity 4: Write a short skit:

Activity 5:  Write a persuasive essay, 5 paragraphs, 1 introduction, thesis sentence,
    and conclusion about: Ideas for Journal Writing:
1. Would you rather be brave, or lonely? Explain!

2. If you knew a secret about your best friend, one that could hurt her if she found
     out (if you found out she/he was adopted, if you found out that her/his parents were
     getting divorced, etc.), would you tell? Why or why not?

3. Annie hated getting up in the middle of the night to clean up the orphanage, what
    do you hate to do?  How could you make it better?

4. Should children who do chores, like the orphans, receive an allowance? Why or
    why not?

5. If you could talk to anyone from the past, like Franklin D. Roosevelt, who would you
    talk to, and what would you want to know?

6. Describe what you think makes someone a hero.

7. If you could have a "night on the town", like Annie did with Mr. Warbucks, where
     would you go, who would you go with, and what would you do?

8. If you could adopt a new cousin, what would your cousin be like?

9. Mr. Warbuck's best Christmas was when Annie became his adopted daughter.
    What was your best holiday, and why was it so special?

10. If you found out that your best friend lived in a "Hooverville", what would you
      do to help him/her? What would you say to him/her?

              Story Starters

Directions: These are for Narrative Writing samples. Please be
creative and descriptive, but all stories must have a beginning, a
middle, and an end!
1.  To get started, first go Plot Boosters, pick a plot idea, and then go to a story starter.

    a. "All of a sudden, I heard a loud crash in the orphanage!"

    b. "It just started raining while we were trying to escape, when..."

    c. "When Mr. Warbucks took me out to the city, a huge blizzard started..."

    d.  "I wanted to get away from it all, so I built the perfect Clubhouse..."

    e.  "I opened my eyes, and there I saw..."

1. After reading the "Quotes from the Critics", write a "critique" of the movie "Annie".
    You may use a "1-10" grid to help organize your thoughts, but this must be written
     in paragraph form-minimum 5 paragraphs.

2. Create a comic strip about Annie, or any other situation with a theme similar to
    Annie's.  Illustrate.  The strip should be at least 3 boxes long. For cartoon formats,
    click on and print.  For reading fun, click onto the comics!

3. Create a comic book with any kind of comic you can create!

4. Write a movie review of "Annie", using the review grid as your guide!  Write at
    least 5 paragraphs telling why you rate the movie either, "Thumbs Up/Thumbs
    Down"!!!
