Why Do I Wear Chains?
.......People have asked me many times, “Why you always wearing all those chains?” Most of
the time I refuse to respond. Although sometimes I say I wear them as a fashion
statement or just to hold my wallet up (heavy with money... pennies =P)... I even go off
with a gibberish-tic speech about how the government is chaining me down.
....... As I look at myself in the mirror, I do realize that the chains I wear are rather
intimidating. One could believe I would use them as weapons. What’s funny is that I
have realized less people “messing with me” since I have added this accessory to my
attire... (that fact right there could be a reason). Anyway, the chains COULD be
considered as a harmful weapon IF someone else would wear them; but, I, Jason Abrams,
wouldn’t hurt a fly... =)
....... Well, the REAL reason why I wear chains begins when I bought my wallet. no...
further back. It probably started with my fetish for pocket watches. I loved the chain
dangling off my side. It added flavor to me. Then there is the fact that I ALWAYS lost my
wallet. ( I mean ALWAYS.) Every wallet I owned, I lost. Then when I was old enough to
actually carry some money I lost it. That was sixty bucks GONE because of my foolish
neglect. Well, Wal-Mart caught my attention. (I saw the wallet with a chain there)
Actually, I have been looking for one. Well, I bought it and that was the end of that. It
both quenched my thirst for fashion and satisfied my need to keep up with my wallet (it
was always attached to me).
....... The wallet originally contained one small chain that was about pocket length, until
one day... I was helping my brother move into his apartment. There, on the ground in
front of his door, I noticed a long dog chain. I didn’t pay too much attention to it as we
moved stuff in the apartment (like couches, beds, and stuff). After all of the hard moving
was over, my nephew, Malique, noticed the chain and he said, “Uncle Jason, there go yo’
chain on the ground.” Awww... it was so cute. Therefore, I HAD to pick it up. At first it
was just to humor Malique, but eventually the double wrapped chain that nearly touches
the ground adapted to my personality.
....... Now, everything about me people always assume there is some logical explanation
why...( For example, my hair, my yellow stuff, rubberbanded wrist, and more). Do I HAVE
to have a reason why? Can’t I just BE? Can I just do stuff WITHOUT a reason? I guess
not. So... to humor all those who ask and expect an answer, I have prepared a reasonable
explanation, why...
....... These chains are symbolic. They are large and prominent so that you CAN ask,
why. My chains are worn to draw your attention. But why do I want your attention, what
am I trying to say with this? Let me tell you... These chains show that I do not own me:
1 Corinthians 6: 19-20 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy
Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you
were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
....... It allows me to be an example of the believers. The owner of my chains is not Sin,
but God with his righteousness.
Romans 6:13-18 Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of
wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from
death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.
For sin shall NOT be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no
means! Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as
slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey--whether you are slaves to sin, which
leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God
that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of
teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free from sin and have
become slaves to righteousness.
....... The verse explains it all. The chains do not represent bondage. I am a slave to
whom I obey, not who forcefully enslaved me. The chains represent my freedom to obey
righteousness. I CHOOSE to wear the chains, the chains didn’t choose me. Therefore, I
WILLINGLY follow my God, my Heavenly Father. I have surrendered myself and my
wants to Him and His will.
....... If you don’t understand this don’t blame me, I just gave you what you asked.
=)
