Go Big Blue!
"In my opinion, there is only one true, top-notch, Park Avenue basketball program in the country, and it is the University of Kentucky." CBS commentator and former Marquette coach Al McGuire "Well, Al, if you can find a basketball with YOUR name on it, we'll play with that one." UK coach Adolph Rupp when McGuire complained about using a Rupp signature edition basketball in an NCAA tournament game against UK 2000-01 UK Basketball Schedule Cats out after NCAA second round, but hopes high for futureDoes the 1999-2000 season remind anyone else of 1994?Bear with me a moment...A team dominated by sophomores(Rodrick Rhodes, Tony Delk, Walter McCarty, Jared Prickett), but featuring a monster senior pivotman (Rodney Dent). Killer schedule (that was the year we played UMass in the Meadowlands, Syracuse in the Carrierdome, in the Maui Invitational --say it with me and Bill Raftery: Brasso!!...Brasso!!). We split with a Florida team which suprised everyone by making the Final Four. UK defeated the eventual national champion (Arkansas in 94, Michigan State in '00) And, dammit, we dropped out in the second round of the tournament. But remembering the highs of 95 AND ESPECIALLY '96!,
great things may lay in store. Go Big Blue!
Wildcats by 17 over MissouriIn its final game of 1999, Kentucky used a big second half run to coast to a 70-53 win over Missouri in the Sugar Bowl Classic. Jamaal Magliore had 13 rebounds to go with his 21 points, which bested his previous career high of 18 against Missouri in the 1997 Maui Classic. J.P. Blevins added 13 in his first start as a Wildcat. Tayshaun Prince and Keith Bogans each had 12 as UK raised its record to 7-4
Wildcats sluggish, but beat UAA by 20As they say, "It warn't purty, but it counts!" UK survived a nightmarish shooting night (1 for 17 on threes) to beat Alaska-Anchorage 62-42. Jamaal Magloire, Tayshaun Prince and Marvin Stone each had ten points and Stone pulled down a team high seven rebounds
UK tops Michigan State 60-58Merry Christmas! The Cats came from 15 down and hung on to avenge last year's season-ending loss to Michigan State. UK spotted the fifth-ranked visitors a 26-11 lead, but came back to within one by halftime. Jaamal Magloire tallied 18 points and 11 boards to earn his third straight double double. Tayshaun Prince added 17 and reserve guard J.P. Blevins hit three three-pointers to help rally the Cats.
Cats dump Cards 76-46Know it: Bragging rights for the new year belong to Big Blue! The Kentucky Wildcats are kings of the Bluegrass after drumming Louisville for the first time in the Tubby Smith era. Tayshaun Price burned the Cards for 20 points and Jamaal Magliore added 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Arizona Wins(again, dammit!)UK's appearance in the Preseason NIT led to the third UK-Arizona matchup since March 1997, and for the third time in a row, Lute Olson's Cats finished on top 63-51. Arizona's quickness negated an outstanding defensive job UK did on Michael Wright, limiting Zona's leading scorer to only one point. UK's Tayshaun Prince was named to the All-Tournament team.
Thanks, Cats, For A Wonderful SeasonAnd cheers for seniors Wayne Turner, Scott Padgett and Heshimu Evans. They'll long be remembered for their courage and character. To Coach Smith and the team, many thanks. And next year...oh, just you wait!
White House Visit !!Coach Tubby Smith and the 1998 NCAA Champion Kentucky Wildcats, along with Pat Summit-Head's NCAA Champion Tennessee Lady Vols, were on hand to recieve a Presidential welcome. The visit was the second for many of the UK group who met with President Clinton after winning the 1996 title. The ceremony allowed outgoing senior Cameron Mills the opportunity to fulfill his preseason promise to Coach Smith that the team would "...introduce you to the President." 1998 NCAA Champions...and the tradition continues 1998 Champions !!
