"Quite a woman, this Agatha Christie. Since she commands one of the most popular branches of literature so firmly, it is a pleasure to find that her intelligence, style, wit, taste, and ingenuity warrant the place she has won...It is likely that our grandchildren will greet a new Poirot just as we have."
--Chicago American
Affectionately known as the Queen Of Crime, Britain's Agatha Christie is the most recognized and celebrated mystery writer in the world. Her writing career lasted over a half of a century, during which time she wrote sixty-eight detective novels and over 100 short stories, four non-fiction novels (including her autobiography and an account of her expenditions with her husband, an archaelogist), six romantic novels under the name Mary Westmacott, and fourteen plays (including, The Mousetrap, which has been running continously in London since 1952, making it the longest-running play in history).
1890-1976
Overall, her mysteries were most noted for their shocking plot twists and clever red herrings. It was she who introduced the world to two of the world's most beloved detectives, Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.
The most widely published author of all time, Christie's books have been translated in 103 languages. To date, her books have sold more than two billion copies worldwide. She is only outsold by the Bible and the works of Shakespeare. In 1971, five years before her death, she was appointed a Dame of the British Empire.
