Mission
Statement
The Gleaner
news online
debuts, with its goal being to raise the standard of rigorous
and aggressive reporting of events in Nigeria. Its focus shall
be the Environment, Development, Human Rights, Conflicts, Labour,
Politics, Business and other social issues of the contemporary
world.
Unlike the
pervading view that believes that serious journalism is in recess,
this publication shall be an addition to the intellectual genre.
It also promises to contribute to widening democratic space and
raising the frontier of debate in a clime where there’s so much
contempt for popular views and action. It shall lend its weight
to the building of democratic structures.
It seeks to
make a point that critical journalism is still possible at a time
when a motley of publicists and spin doctors have virtually taken
the centre stage of the Nigerian media industry. At a time when
the citizenry is groping as to the options to great strides for
a country still enmeshed on a rudderless path, this publication
intends to be a ready armour. It shall show the way to greatness
for our people.
The Gleaner
news online is certainly not a contribution to value free
journalism. It also does not make a pretense about being in the
middle of the road. This is because a man who prefers to take
refuge in the middle of the road gets knocked down by a vehicle.
The publication
shall take sides on behalf of popular struggles of the people
of Nigeria. It shall resist the move to crippling authoritarianism
and dictatorship in its entire ramification. It also intends to
arm a near defenceless populace, smothered by the misrule of the
ruling elite. It shall be a voice in the global South South for
all those who seek genuine independence and freedom to govern
themselves according to the dictates of their conscience. It shall
engender the environment for the building of a new Nigeria.
It shall also
provide the platform to stimulate the energies of the diverse
peoples of the country to take their destiny in their hands. It
shall be a voice for Africans and Africans in Diaspora. It shall
also be an alternative voice for the South South global divide
as it groans under the weight of massive western propaganda.
