"I don't want to have lived in vain like most people.
I want to be useful or bring enjoyment to people,
even those I've never met.
I want to go on living even after my death!
And that's why I'm grateful to God for having given me this gift,
which I can use to develop
and to express all that's inside me!"

(Anne Frank, Wednesday April 5th 1944)

Zweig's Death mask Ever heard of Stefan Zweig? Well, he wrote his 'Schachnovelle' . Seen from a psychological point of view he is very deep. Every chessplayer has to read this piece of writing.

This book has several stories by him, but I have only read 2. The one I remember, since it is such a well known story -- it is hard to forget, is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

I enjoyed this book, as it is a subject that interests me greatly. Computers and the Internet. I believe this subject falls into the category of 'forbidden knowledge'. It is startling to read about Internet security. All so new in the public domain, and though it is a fantastic technology, what do we do with it? It must be put to more constructive uses, and made safer.
The book itself is about computer attacks that baffled the authorities for years.

Although I have respect for the authors, I do not believe that a page is due them, as the other literary masters here enjoy.

MaughamI still remember the impact the short stories by W. Somerset Maugham had on me. Thrilling, mysterious, 'realistic' and a marvelous plot. Wonderful.

n8.

I read this book because of my interest in fractals. It was a challenge to read, to be certain, for me anyway. I have no science or math background, and this talked about things that are way beyond me. Still I enjoyed it. It made me want to look further into the subjects it discussed, really made me think about the universe and how amazingly complex everything really is. It may be time to read it again to try and absorb something more from it.

You can read more here if you like.

Several books I have read by Godfried Bomans.

I was interested in learning a bit about Taoism, but did not want to read anything too lengthy or deep, so this was the perfect choice. It was very light but also informative with plenty of insight into the subject. I felt I was with old friends with the Pooh clan.

h9. One book I have often used to quote from is a collection of aphorisms, named 'Pearls of Wisdom' gathered by Vivien Foster.

'Aphorisms are portable wisdom, the quintessential extracts of thought and feeling.'

R.W. Alger.

I read somewhere about this book several years ago, not remembering the name or authors, but finally came across it last year. It has been helpful to me in reading briefly about many subjects that I would like to know more about. It is a starting point, whetting my appetite for further information on subjects that appeal to me. I enjoy reference books that one can always turn to.

I remember that when I read pieces of 'The Power of Positive Thinking' by Norman Vincent Peale I felt better.
