Parents Info On Gymnastics
I feel we should encourage our and all children to do something active. Not just gymnastics, but other things in life as well. We should take the time to get involved with what our children are doing. One day they will grow up and the little girl or boy you once watched grow up won't be little anymore.
Well this is the one question I am constantly asked, Well let's put it this way. Out of 300,000 kids that enter state level competition will get cut down to about 90,000 in Regionals. Then that 90,000 turns into 45,000 for sectionals, bringing the total to 500 to US National level, and finally 10 to 15 of that will go international and world competition. Then when it's all said and done only 7 of that 10 to 15 will make it to the Olympics. That does not mean your child isn't that good, but the odds are much better to make states before going for Olympic Gold. But in my opinion never give up that dream, always do your best that is what really counts.
Many coaches teach many different styles. But one sure way to see if the coach your child has is up to par with your credentials. Here are some tips. Does this coach make fun and learning more important than winning. Is this coach always encouraging the kids. What credentials and papers does this coach have to prove their coaching abilities. What do other parents in the gym say about the coach. Do the children being taught by this coach feel and look comfortable around them.
Like all good quality gymnastics schools the gym should be fully insured and should have on staff medical personelle. Also the coaches should always make aware of the safety issues concerning gymnastics, and finally does the gym have a safety procedure incase of a serious accident and waiver forms.
In my opinion this topic is usually up in the air for most skills, if the help is needed for warm up exercises like sit-ups, push-ups, etc., then I say great and thanks for helping out, but for backhandsprings, and salto's, then my answer is leave it to the coaches to take care of, unless you are a certified gymnastics coach yourself.
the levels 1 to 10 and Elite in gymnastics mainly show your the progression your child is at in a competitive gymnastics environment, and every time they go up one their skills will improve and new skills will be stressed. Level 6 is usually noted as Compulsory level competitions, bringing level 7 to 9 normal competition, Level 10 National and collegic level gymnastics, and Elite being International and Olympic level competition.
If you really want to help coach your child ask their coach if there is anything you can do to help, but the best way to help coach them is to be there for them.
