1. The Group Newspaper Every two weeks your group should make and publish a newspaper. The newspaper is the voice of your group. When people read it they will know what your group thinks about the world and what kind of people you are. What ought to go into your newspaper? Look at some newspapers to see what kind of things are put in them. You will find News, that is reports of events which have happened somewhere. You will also find an Editorial, in which the people who publish the paper say what they think about the news. There are also advertisements. Notice where the different kinds of writing in a newspaper are put. Important news items are usually put on the front page. Comment is usually in the centre. Letters to the Editor, sports news, provincial news each have their own places. When you publish news make sure that what you say is true. Don't write about anything you have not seen yourself, or which was not seen by someone you have talked to. Don't copy from the Daily Nation. Write about events in the school, in
the town, in your class, in the English Block, in your group.
Write about anything you think will interest the people who will
read your paper. When new teachers or visitors come to the school
interview them - ask them about where tney come from.Newspapers
are about people. If your group wants to change something in
the English Block, write about it in your paper. Perhaps others
will be made to agree with you when they have read your paper. 1. Choose a name. You will use the name for a whole year so make sure it is a good name. Tell your group's tutor what the name is. 2. Choose an editor. His job is to decide the shape of the paper and where to put the different articles you write. He also decides what articles should be accepted and which rejected. There should be a different editor for each issue. 3. Decide which people are going to write which articles and decide what kind of things you want to put in your paper. 4. Decide on a definite date when your
first issue will be ready. Your tutor will tell you when it ought
to be ready. 2. The Group Magazine |
