ECP Extended Capabilities Port, a bi-directional parallel port used mainly by printers and scanners.
EIDE See IDE.
EISA Enhanced or Extended Industry Standard Architecture, an improved version of ISA, now superceded by PCI.
e-mail address Address that identifies the recipient of an e-mail message. The e-mail address for comments or suggestions about this book is winxptcr@gurus.com.
embedding In OLE, storing an object of one type file a file of another type, optionally maintaining linkage from the second file to the file that originally contained the object, for example, an Excel spreadsheet embedded in a Word Perfect document.
EML File extension, used for e-mail messages, that is used by the Outlook Express Inbox Assistant to reply to messages automatically.
EMS See expanded memory.
encrypted attribute Attribute available only for files and folders stored in NTFS partitions, causing Windows to encrypted (encode) the file or folder with a password. compressed folders can also be encrypted.
encrypted compressed folders Compressed folders to which a password has been assigned.
environment variable Variable used by DOS and early versions of Windows to store configuration information.
EPP (Enhanced Parallel Port) Bi-directional parallel port used mainly by devices other than printers.
Ethernet Type of local area network communication, including standards for cabling and network cards.
event Windows operation that can trigger a sound or a log entry. For example, exiting a program is an event.
Event Viewer MMC snap-in that displays logs of system, security, and application events.
executable or EXE file Program file, with the file extension .exe.
exiting Windows Stopping the Windows XP program and either shutting down or restarting your computer.
expanded memory (EMS) Memory management system that allowed DOS programs to use more than 640KB of memory.
expansion slot Slot inside a computer into which you can insert an adapter card.
Explorer One of two programs that come with Windows: Internet Explorer (a Web browser) or Windows Explorer (a file management utility).
Explorer bar Information appearing in the left pane of a Windows Explorer window, usually displaying a folder tree.
Explorer window Window displayed by the Windows Explorer program.
extended memory specification (XMS) Memory management system that allowed DOS programs to use more than 640KB of memory.
extended partition Or Extended DOS partition. Section of a hard disk that stores one or more logical drives.
extension Last part of a filename, attached to the rest of the filename by a period (.). Extensions are usually three letters long and indicate the file type. For example, a file named Example.txt has the extension .txt.
external modem Modem that connects to your computer's serial port by a serial cable.
extracting Copying a file from a compressed folder or ZIP file and decompressing it as you copy it.
