This is a sweet, fun, two color cabled hat made for my friend Haley. (I'm the one modeling in the picture though) Relatively easy to make. In three sizes.
You Will Need:
Needles:1 US 9 circular needle (or DPNs)
1 US 10 circular needle (or DPNs) OR RIGHT SIZE FOR GAUGE
4 US 10 DPNs (for finishing)
Yarn: 1 skein worsted weight yarn (I use Red Heart TLC cuz I'm cheap... 1 hat is about half a skein, so make one for charity!)
1 cable needle
1 tapestry needle
Gauge: About 4 stitches per inch, or 16 stitches is 4"
Fits: 18"-19" (20"-21", 22"-23") head
Directions will be given in small (medium, large) form.
Pattern Stitch: (10 stitch repeat)
Row 1: k4, p2, 1cb, p2
Row 2: k4, p2, k2, p2
Row 3: 2cf, p2, k2, p2
Row 4: k4, p2, k2, p2
Confused by all of this? Explanations of 1cb here and 2cf here.
Here we go!
Cast on 80 (90, 100) stitches onto your size 9 needles. Join being careful not to twist. Work 3" in k1p1 rib.
Switch to size 10 needles.
*k4, p2, k2, p2 -repeat from * for two rounds. 8 (9, 10) repeats.
Start pattern stitch. Work to desired length, or about 6.5" from cast on. Begin decreases.
Decreases:
(At this point, you will probably need to switch to DPNs)
Row 1: *k 6 (7, 8) stitches in pattern. K2 tog. Repeat from * to the end of the round.
Row 2: *k 5 (6, 7) stitches in pattern. K2 tog. Repeat from * to the end of the round.
Row 3: *k 4 (5, 6) stitches in pattern. K2 tog. Repeat from * to the end of the round.
Follow this system until there are 8 (9, 10) stitches left on the needle. K2 tog for the entire row. (If you're making a medium, knit the last stitch)
Cut yarn. Run remaining thread through the last 4 (5, 5) loops and into the hat. Sew in ends.
Model your new hat for your friends!
Remember, the brim can be folded up for extra insulation.
