SUBLIMINAL IMAGES

For years people have stated that Exorcist director William Freidkin used subliminal imagery through-out the movie to help insert fear into it's viewers. Indeed, there are many frames throughout The Exorcist that are spontaneous and seem irrelevant, but they are not subliminal (lasting longer than the required frame-rate) and do hold meaning to the story. There have been many of these hidden images added to The Version You've Never Seen, which was a treat for all die-hard Exorcist fans!

So - here's a rundown on all of the 'subliminal' images in The Exorcist: The Version You've Never Seen.

Captain Howdy / Pazuzu

Captain Howdy is the name Pazuzu the demon gives himself when possessing Regan. Many times throughout the film, Howdy's face can be seen flashing up on the screen... even more-so in The Version You've Never Seen.

Director William Freidkin says that these flashes are what the characters are seeing. Just like when we imagine in real life, we see short images of things.

Regan is being exorcised. The lights are flickering on and off, and Regan is flinging her head from side to side. In one part when the lights go down and Regan is turning her head to face us, it is Captain Howdy.

1:45:24 Captain Howdy Kind of like the hypnotized face. Regan spins her head around during the exorcism and we get a close-up of her face with Captain Howdy's dissolved in.

1:56:23 Mrs. Karass Father Karass demands that Pazuzu enter him. He is possessed and about to jump out the window. There is a shot of the window before he shouts 'Nooo!" and within the flicker of the curtains, he can see his mothers face.
