"An Island Out of Time, A Memoir of Smith Island in the Chesapeake Bay"
by Tom Horton
Horton writes an environmental column in the Baltimore Sun which I sometimes enjoy and sometimes don't. So I was prepared for Island Out of Time to be average. But I was more than pleasantly surprised. Horton has written a first-rate account of the watermen and their families on Smith Island from the first-hand observations of his family, which lived on the island for several years, as well as great oral accounts from the islanders themselves.

"Beautiful Swimmers: watermen, Crabs and the Chesapeake Bay"
by William Warner
An absolutely fascinating book on the Bay, the Eastern shore, the blue crab and more. William W. Warner's gifted prose depicts the watermen and their life in a way that is both honest, sympathetic and informative. As a non-native Washingtonian, this book finally explains so many of the
mysteries of the bay -- from soft shell crab and how/why they get that way --to Tangier Island and how/why it became so popular. It is the kind of book you immediately want to share with your friends... your family... your lunch bunch... the guy sitting next to you on the subway...

"Chesapeake"
by James A. Michener
The marvelous quality of Michener's writing is his ability to combine many stimulating topics into a captivating story line, and to give each one meticulous treatment. Chesapeake tells of Native American tribes, development of imperial attitudes in England, the early spirit of the American colonies, the first American feminists, and spine tingling tales of pirates and adventure on the high seas. The characters come to life in
uncanny realness, and posses qualities that endear them to the reader forever. Michener is a master storyteller.

"Life in the Chesapeake Bay"
by Alice Jane Lippson and Robet L. Lippson
Published in 1984, the first edition of Life in the Chesapeake Bay became an instant classic, providing fascinating insights into some of the more than two thousand
plants and animals that make their home in American's largest estuary, the Chesapeake Bay. Superbly illustrated and clearly written, this acclaimed field guide
described the richly varied habitats found along the mid Atlantic coast and cataloged more than three hundred species of fish, invertebrates, and aquatic plants commonly
found in the Chesapeake Bay and in coastal inlets form Cape Hatteras to Cape Cod. Reflecting a further decade of research, this new edition expands on the
Lippsons' discussion of wetland habitats and covers an additional life species closely associated with the Chesapeake Bay, including a broad range of birds and
several species of insects, reptiles, and mammals. Written to be useful to a variety of readers - year-round residents and summer vacationers, professional biologists,
and amateur scientists, conservationists and sportsmen - Life in the Chesapeake Bay is a unique and comprehensive guide to one of this country's most important
and beautiful natural resources.
