Baltimore, Maryland Flannerys

Two Flannery families, likely related, emigrated to the United States during the Great Hunger.  These two Flannery families, Michael Flannery and Brigit (O) Mara, and Francis Flannery and Honora (O) Meara, are known to originate in County Tipperary.

The Michael Flannery family is most closely associated with the parish and city of Nenagh, the largest town in County Tipperary, located in the northwestern quarter of the county.  The author and her Flannery cousins have visited the area on multiple occasions and have located baptism records for many of the children of Michael and Bridget (Mara) Flannery.

(The name Mara/Meara also hails from County Tipperary, particularly the parish just east of Nenagh, Toomevara.  The marriage and baptism records for Michael Flannery and Bridget Mara have not been located to date.)

Major Cities in County Tipperary

The second known Flannery family, very likely related to Michael Flannery, above, is that of Francis Flannery and Honora Meara.  One baptism record for the offspring of this couple has been located at Cloughjordan parish.  Cloughjordan is a middling sized town, maybe 15 kms north of Nenagh.

Cemetery records that are assumed, by the North Tipperary Heritage Centre, to be associated with the Francis Flannery line are provided here.  The author has visited the old Kilruane and Ballygibbon parish church and graveyards to transcribe tombstone inscriptions for Flannerys buried there.

Kilruane parish is so small as to not be shown on the map above.  The townland of Kilruane is tiny, punctuated only by Luckybags Pub (owned by Mearas), the former National School (taught by a Flannery from County Offaly at the turn of the century), and the ruins of the three churches that have been erected on this site since the 1300s.  The  townland is about 5 km from Nenagh.
