The Lanhams of Maryland and the District of Columbia

Compiled by Dr. Howard G. Lanham

The following site contains lists of primary source mentions of persons named Lanham living in the State of Maryland or the District of Columbia (once part of Maryland). It is not a genealogy as such since there are many mentions that might belong to one of several people with the same name and since many of the mentions give no clue to the relationship between the individual and other Lanhams. Please click on this link for introductory and background material.

NOTES:

  1. She generally appears as Eliza.
  2. Family bible records of the Hanson (Henson) Lanham family record Mary E. Lanham born March 7, 1842 and correspond to this church record. In the family bible records the father's name appears twice: once as "Henson" and a second time as "Hanson." The name Henderson appears in this baptismal record and again on the 1878 map. It may be that Henderson was the actual name and "Henson" is a short form of it.
  3. Hanson Lanham (also as Henson and here "Hinson") has an unknown ancestry. This is an early mention of him and the nature of his involvement with the former slave, Francis Davis or the estate of Mary Green Hardey is unknown and unexplained. Mary Green Hatton married Nathan Anthony Hardey (1745 – 1818) on October 4,1796 in Prince George's County. He is claimed to have been the son of William Hardey and Elizabeth Lanham, daughter of Richard Lanham by several researchers. It is interesting that Mary Green Hatton's estate also freed at least three other slaves who took the surname Lanham according to certificates appearing in the the Prince George's County, Certificates of Freedom, Original, 1831-1863 (Maryland Archives On-line).
