Storing Fragrance Oils

There are a variety of reasons to store your fragrance or EO in amber glass, in a darker, room temperature or cool place. First, you need to protect your fragrance/essential oil from the external elements - heat (elements can volatilize off if the bottle gets too hot), sunlight (sunlight will break down some of the more sensitive components in the oils), oxidation (too much air flow will cause the FO/EO to start oxidizing its components off).  Also, some fragrances pick up the scent of the plastic and just smell off once they've been sitting in plastic for too long. You spent money on your product, it's worth that extra $$ to store them properly.

You also need to protect the bottle from the fragrance or essential oil.  Many essential oils and fragrance oils will cause plastic bottles to "cave" in on themselves, or simply eat away at the plastic until it breaks and whoosh! all the FO/EO flows out. Just like orange EO will take off furniture polish or nail polish, many EO's/FO's do the same to plastic bottles. The moral of the story? Switch to glass - even if it's clear - once you get the FO or EO home.

Most FO's will last approximately 1 year on the shelf, minimum, if stored appropriately. Some will last longer but the general rule of thumb is a year.

Happy soaping!
