York

York was William Clark's African American slave.  He was a special interest of Native Americans.  Many of the Natives believed he was considered York a great medicine man.  Many times they said this when they could not explain somthing or if there was unexplainable mysteries.
York was really good about the attention he got.  He would let the Native Americans rub their fingers with his skin to see if he was painted black.  The Flatheads believed that he painted himself with charcoal.  Because they do it in battle they thought York was the bravest man one the expedition.
York was one of the first men on the expedition to see the Pacific Ocean.
York and Sacagawea had a special bond.  They were the only people on the expedition that were considered property of another.
After the expedition Clark gave York his freedom along with  a team of horses and a wagon.  With this he set up a freight hauling business.
