Resonance Reconnaissance
This is the debut CD, an introduction to the musical potential and guitar playing of Waldon Reed, Jr. Despite some of the sonic limitations of this recording, the very respectable guitar, bass, and drum performances of Reed's colorful compositions are nevertheless able to convey that there is something important here, something intriguing, something profound. This CD is the fruit of just three musicians whose otherwise mundane musical existences in a 'wedding band' led them to form a fusion 'cover' group in late 1989. This group became the test vehicle for Reed's compositions and ultimately the group that created this CD. This CD highlights the more technical side of Reed's guitar playing which ushers him in to the camps of such guitar greats as Holdsworth, Vai, Satriani, and Morse. As with Resonance Reconnaissance, this CD is essentially a fusion trio. In addition to the exciting display of guitar chops, this CD boasts of the formidable drum contribution of George Wietecha as well as the always 'right where they should be' bass interpretations of Paul Laginess. Like Webber, Reed turned to holy scripture for the inspirational impetus of this work. Rather than using a single plot/storyline, Reed decided that each of the 11 songs would be a separate concept or event. Ultimately, this work is a collection of dramatic songs rather than a true rock opera. In spite of the fact that this recording is more of a showcase of Reed's compositional skills than his guitar virtuosity, there are enough guitar 'gems' here to remind us that indeed this is a guitar player's recording. Substantially noteworthy are the near genius performances of virtuoso vocalists Raymond and Dawn Roberts. Read the lyrics. Along with the usual range of subtleties and excesses that have become the trademarks of Reed's electric playing, this recording also features his classical technique in a pairing with his wife, Celeste, on flute. The arrangements contained in this recording are all Reed's own and cover quite an eclectic range of styles. From the hauntingly romantic 'O Little Town of Bethlehem' for solo flute to the middle eastern 'vibe' of 'The First Noel' to the 'no apologies' power rock treatment of Verbum Caro, no dynamic nuance or tone color is left unexplored.
