The Driving Guide
A Crash Course in Automobile Handling
The Rules of the Road
While on the Interstate and Other Multi-lane Highways
- Choose a speed. Use Cruise Control or make careful note of vehicle speed to ensure other drivers are able to sufficiently predict whether to pass.
- Pass at a speed that is no lower than the speed limit when an automobile is following.
- Maintain at least a slightly higher speed than the initial speed of an automobile that is to be passed.
- Maintain a constant speed when being passed.
- Do not travel on the interstate at any speed less than 15mph below the posted speed limit.
- Do not, for any reason, tailgate. Provide at least two full car lengths after the vehicle ahead.
- Upon the approach of any vehicle from behind, move to another lane if traveling in the left-most lane.
- When a lane is available to the right and traffic in the current lane is moving faster, move to the available lane, unless the lane is a designated exit lane.
- When planning to exit the highway at an exit ramp, move to the appropriate exit lane at least half a mile from the exit.
- When approaching a clearly marked construction zone where lanes may end, move into the appropriate lane at the next possible opportunity.
While on Two-lane Roads
- When driving less than the speed limit where the road lacks adequate passing zones, pull off to the shoulder to let faster moving traffic by.
- Do not, for any reason, tailgate. Provide at least two full car lengths after the vehicle ahead.
- Maintain a constant speed when being passed.
This guide is by no means an adequate interpretation of the law. It is simply a set of guidelines for improving traffic flow and preventing road rage. Do not use these guidelines where the governing laws or statutes prohibit such behavior.
