SDW- A Pictorial

"Through news we see the hearts of treachery, valor, and benevolence; we see the minds of the grotesque at work and the minds of geniuses at play."

NEWS

IMPORTANT NOTE: I have found that upon attempting to download any of the MS Office files using Internet Explorer 5.0, a separate window appears asking for a user name and password.  Simply click on "cancel" and the file should download properly (assuming, of course, that the required Office component is installed).

We made two trades today; I sold our 40 shares of Rational Software (RATL) at 53 11/16 for a 7% ($140) profit and also sold our 40 shares of Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX) for a 26% ($573) profit.  I made the move before the Fed announcement because I knew that there would be profit-taking afterwards.  We have over 7K for some bargain hunting.  My top picks include PMCS, NTAP, and MLNM.

I apologize for the lack of an update on our holdings and transactions in the past 3 months.  I have made numerous transactions since the last update, including selling Foundry for a decent gain and profiting on Checkpoint Software and Network Appliance.  See the spreadsheets in the Performance section for more details.  Also check Holdings to see our current portfolio.  This past Friday, I purchased 40 shares of Vertex Pharmaceuticals, a small, but very promising biotechnology company with a very exciting product pipeline, including treatments for AIDS and cancer.

2000 was a very rough year for the markets.  Concerns over the valuation of technology stocks in April and September/October, the uncertainty of the presidential race in November, the flood of profit warnings in November/December, and the realization of the economic slowdown in December all contributed to the troubles of the  Nasdaq, which dropped over 50% from its yearly high.  In fact, this was the worst year ever for the Nasdaq.    Hopefully, the 0.5 basis point cut Greenspan made this past Wednesday will set the stage for a rally in 2001.

Broadvision is being added to the S&P 500 index on 10/23.  Being added to this prestigious index is monumental, for it shows that Broadvision is one of the top American public firms.  Further, many mutual funds have portfolios that track the S&P 500 so there will be lots of buying within the next few days which should drive up the price.  BVSN closed above 28 after-hours.

This article shows that Broadvision's new MarketMaker software is gaining acceptance.  FuelQuest, a leading provider of B2B services for the petroleum industry has selected Broadvision MarketMaker as software to run its back-office B2B system.

A Red Herring writer compiled a list of high-growth companies with strict guidelines (including revenue growth that exceeds 25% for the next 5 yrs.) that should perform very well.  Two of our holdings, RFMD and FDRY made it on the list.

A nice article detailing DSP technology, a $6 billion market that is expected to grow to $19 billion in 2004.  TXN owns 50% of the market.

9/21/00 - We sold our 46 shares of Teradyne (TER) at 40 15/16 for a 45% ($1535) loss, in turn buying 62 shares of Broadvision (BVSN) at 30 9/16.  Check the Holdings section for more info on Broadvision.

9/14/00 - At last, the site is complete!  I apologize to all current and future shareholders; it did say in the first quarterly report that I was striving to finish in the spring.  Well, for everyone, take a look around and please email Matt or I with any questions and/or comments.  And PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE check out the Pictorial as well as the special section dedicated to Matt Nehmer.  For current shareholders, I will try to update the share price (found on the homepage) by 6:30 PM at the close of each trading day.  For any interested in joining, please carefully read the "Mission", "Performance", and "History" sections.  This is the first release of the site; I will attempt to improve it when time permits.  One feature that I am anxious to add is one where the stock holder enters a password and  is able to retrieve the performance of his own assets.  But for the time being, enjoy!!!

For current investors:

Here are the transactions that we made in the past week:

Last Friday (9/8), I sold our 23 shares of Powerwave Tech (PWAV) at 47 1/8 for a 12% ($118) gain.  This stock had gone up over 50% in the past month, and I decided to take profits.  This turned out to be an excellent decision, for PWAV closed at 41 3/4 today.

Another transaction that occurred on Friday was the purchase of 11 shares of Foundry Networks (FDRY) at 80 /18.  For more details on this stock, see the Holdings section.

This past Monday (9/11), I purchased 35 shares of Vignette (VIGN), a leading e-business software company at 29 13/16 with the cash obtained from the PWAV sale.  Today, I sold it at 38 13/16 for a healthy 30% ($315) in a mere 3 days.  In turn, I purchased 18 more shares of FDRY at  74 5/16.
