There is a well-documented accommodation crisis in San Francisco. Several causes of this include:
  • The City’s popularity amongst students, travelers and tourists
  • The proximity to Silicon Valley and the inward movement of it’s wealth
  • The geographical constraints for expansion

Visitors and settlers in San Francisco need to be aware of this. However it is not all bad news:

The Bay Area itself offers an abundance of open spaces and housing which has led to many Irish locating in places such as Oakland or Berkeley and commuting into the City via BART (Bay Area Rapid Transport System).

For those that are determined to stay in the City- accommodation may be found via a number of sources:

  • Personal ads and classifieds
  • Word of mouth
  • The Internet
  • Agencies
  • Notice Boards in laundries, hotels and hostels etc.
  • The Irish-Herald newspaper

A useful article from The Irish Herald (California’s Irish newspaper) outlining the accommodation issues of J1 students can be read by clicking on below:

Irish students take on the city’s accommodation crisis in droves

Average Prices:
Youth/Traveler hostels:
(some have max 3 wk stay)
$17 p/night $120 weekly
Residential hotels: $200 p/room p/week
Roommate finding agency: $60 registration fee
Room in flat (sublet) $700 p/month
1 bedroom studio $1200 p/month
2 Bedroom apartment $2000 p/month

+ Deposit of 1 months rent

Hostels:

Staying in a travelers/youth hostel is the most realistic (& often the only) option for new arrivals to the City. There are several hostels to choose from but most are fully booked on a regular basis. Most do not accept reservations so they are on a first come-first served basis.

The typical hostel will sleep 5 to a room, have a kitchen and common room and be located in the downtown. For those that seek more privacy a double room may be an option. Living in a hostel may not be ideal but it is a good starting point. You will meet many Irish and International travelers who share common objectives. In some hostels it is possible to work several hours per day in exchange for food and board.

Factors you should consider when choosing a hostel/hotel:

  • Facilities such as: Kitchen, Laundry, Common room, TV, email, lockers, showers
  • Curfew
  • Max or min. length of stay
  • Weekly rates
  • Amount of people to a room
  • Safety and security
  • Friendliness of residents, travelers and staff
  • Cleanliness of hostel – how often is it cleaned? Bed bugs?

Apartments:

Now for the big issue of apartments. You have probably heard about the accommodation crisis in the City. This means a lack of short-term affordable accommodation. If you want an affordable flat be prepared to pay a high deposit, live outside the city and share with many others. Then again you can be lucky and get a good cheap sublet flat or room.

Many agencies and landlords require a lease to be signed committing you to a period of rent – e.g. 6 months. Some students have reported that landlords can be reluctant to rent to Irish students due to their boisterous living habits (!!%$??@!).
