Whatever you’re into… San Francisco has it – Sex clubs, gospel churches, techno clubs, international festivals, weekly concerts, and a network of great pubs – including over 25 Irish bars. This is by no means a comprehensive guide to what’s on and where to go but merely aims to point you in the right direction.

The best source of information is the free Weekly publications (every Wed. from Street boxes) the SF weekly and the SF Bay Guardian. Check out the Irish Herald every month for a more Irish flavor. Word of mouth is also a safe bet.

Top 10 things to see & do while you are in San Francisco

  1. Visit the largest Chinatown outside of China
  2. Visit the Haight-Asbury district and learn about it’s hippy origins
  3. Take a boat to nearby Alcatraz prison
  4. Take a cablecar up the steep and windy San Franciscan streets
  5. Stroll around the Latino mission district for culture, murals and food
  6. Wander around laid back Berkeley on the east bay
  7. Take a ferry to nearby Sausalito
  8. Visit the Golden Gate park, one of the world’s largest urban parks
  9. See the famous 49ers at Candlestick park
  10. Drop in for a few (decent) pints at one of Geary Streets many Irish bars

Worth Noting......

Identification/ID

You will be asked for ID wherever you go that involves alcohol. There are very few exceptions and it is a harsh difference from Ireland. In many cases they will accept a drivers license with other ID but more often a passport is required (sometimes a good photocopy will suffice). Be aware of this and don’t let it annoy you – it’s a federal law strictly enforced and not necessarily the venue/pubs policy.

Tipping

Another cultural variation is the process of tipping. All restaurants and bars and taxis operate on tipping basis – usually for every drink/round/meal purchased. 15% is the figure generally mentioned. There is no way around this and if you expect decent service the next time you visit, be prepared to tip – good!
