Launch date and time: May 18, 2005 at 3:30PM
Launch location: Clardy Elementary School
Launch wind and weather: Cool, clear, and mild winds
Were happy to report that KCAR returned to assist the Clardy Elementary kids in 2005! To make a long story short, Mrs Dailey and I ran into each other at one of the Argonia launches late last year (2004). She indicated that she wasnt running a great big launch as in the previous year but that the Science Class was having a space day with only about 30 kids. She seemed to think we wouldnt be interested in helping with such a small number. If she only knew! Any excuse to launch rockets (and get an afternoon off from work into the bargain). So I told her, one or one hundred, were there for you!
We were rained out on the 11th, but the weather was more cooperative the following week. As promised there were about 30 kids, each with the same rocket Estes Gnomes already made.
As you can see from the photos, the kids had almost as much fun as we club members! About 17 of the kids were able to get in two flights. We didnt have a lot of trouble with lost rockets and thats especially notable considering the smallish field.
We followed the standard procedures; we handed out motors, ignitors, and wadding and then gave instructions and assistance for prepping. Then six kids would head out to the pads with their rockets, staying on the outside to avoid getting tangled in the wires and to make photos of kids getting ready to fly easier. Wed count down together, and the rockets would take to the air two at a time. Also as usual, one of the class members was enlisted to take down names as the fliers went out, and was rewarded with being the flipper of the switches and launcher of the launches.
The usual suspects turned out to assist, Randall, Christian, Martin, Dave and me. All in all, we had a great time, and hope to be invited back again next year!
