Senator,
Republican presidential nominee (1996). Born July 22, 1923 in Russell,
Kansas. A senator for Kansas, and for several years the minority
leader in the Senate, he sought the Republican nomination for the
presidency in 1980 and 1988. Dole became majority leader in the Senate in
1994, following Republican gains in the 1994 elections. He resigned in
1996 to campaign for the presidency, but he was defeated by Bill Clinton
in the presidential election. Since 1936 he has been married to
Elizabeth Dole, who became Secretary of Transportation in the Reagan
administration in 1983, and Secretary of Labor under Bush (1989--90). |
