From Files of Melicent Remy:
1872, June 12Deed of sale of the land inherited by Susan Mozingo Ward from Sally Mozingo, by Susans inheritors, which although are stated as Lewis Ward, Sr. (Susans husband) and children, also include some of the grandchildren - i.e. a Lewis and a Lewis, Jr. - one of these is of the next generation down. This land was sold to Rufus Mozingo of Wayne Co., N.C. and the deed of sale was recorded in Brooks Co., Ga. (once Thomas Co., where Lewis and Susan had gone when they left N.C. for the second time) and sent to Wayne Co. for filing. (I have never found a copy of this in Brooks Co., but will look again when I return.) 21 acres were sold for $21 dollars. Note that the "old Roberts Road" is mentioned in the description. (Per The Farm Recording Docket 33HH, p 349 Office of Registrat of Deeds, Wayne Co, NC.)
1873, Jan.6Deed of sale from Rufus Mozingo and wife Nancy (who was Nancy Ward & whose relationship to Lewis is currently unknown) to William Grant. (Note: Winnie Mozingo may have had twins (extramaritally) by Thomas Grant, so there may have been a relationship here.). Note that the same 21 acres that Lewis Ward et al had sold to Rufus six months before for $21, Rufus now sells for $84. (Rufus was a pretty shrewd businessman!) (Per The Farm, Record of Deeds, Book 33, p 429, Wayne Co, NC)

... Rufus Mozingo was Elvy Mozingo's son and possibly Matthew HINSON's son. He was the town crier for the courts plus a provost marshal during the Civil War. I think he was Mark Mozingo's cousin.... He also was honored in 1909 with the Holy Cross Medal for his military service in the Civil War....Gayle
