SPENCER MOZINGO (CA. 1750 - 1832) by Leta Rose Rowland
Spencer Mozingo was born around 1750. His parents are unknown. This birthdate has been estimated by using an average of 25 years per generation and using the birth date of his eldest son, Joseph. Spencer must have married around 1773. The name of his wife is unknown.

The first known records of Spencer Mozingo are the census records of Orange Co. VA:
1782 - Spence (Spencer) Mozingo - 6 whites (4 children assumed)
1785 - Spence (Spencer) Mozingo - 7 whites (5 children assumed)
1787 - Spence (Spencer) Mozingo - 7 whites (5 children assumed)

The next Orange Co. VA reference that has been found for this family are the marriages of two of Spencers sons; both marriages took place in St. Thomas Parish.
1. Joseph Mozingob. 1774, d. Mar 18, 1836m. Mary (Polly) Clemmons
2. Thomas Mozingo b. 1775, d. ca 1830m. Milla
3. James Mozingob. 1780, d. ca 1849m. Mildred Clemmons
4. *Polly Mozingob. 1784, d. ??m. James Clemmons(Harrison Co. KY - 1821)
5. *Nelly Mozingob. 1785, d. ??m. Thomas Clemmons(Bourbon Co. KY- 1813)
6 *Benj. Mozingob. 1800 d. ??m. Peggy Pollard (Harrison Co. KY - 1820)
*NOT PROVEN (deduced from KY marriages and 1810 census)

Spencer Mozingo and his family including his married sons Joseph and James left Orange Co. VA around 1808 and crossed over the mountains into KY with the possible exception of son Thomas Mozingo who may have remained behind until after the War of 1812. They settled in an area about 25 miles north of Lexington, KY in what is now an area known for its thoroughbred horse farms (near Cynthiana and Paris KY.) It is suspected that the Clemmons clan may have also moved around the same time since Polly and Nelly Mozingos also married Clemmons but after they came to KY.
The Bourbon Cp. KY tax lists show Spencer Mozingo and John (?) Mozingo owning land on Feb 17, 1808. From 1809 through 1814, the tax lists show that Spencer and James Mozingo owned land in Bourbon Co. KY Joseph Mozingo first appears in Scott Co. KY in 1810. The 1810 Feberal (sic) Census for KY has the following:

Joseph Mezinger Scott Co. Pg 17830010 - 20010 - 00
Spencer MesingerBourbon Co.Pg 12710001 - 01101 - 00
James MesingerBourbon Co.Pg 12710010 - 10100 - 00

From 1815 - 1819 Spencer, Joseph and James Mozingo all are listed in the Harrison Co. tax lists as owning land on Raven Creek. It is interesting to note that their last name is also spelled Monsingo, Munzingo, and Moxsinger at various times. Spencer disappears from the tax lists in 1819 and a strange name (Gallaton Monsingo) shows up (just for 1819) as owning land on S. Licking Harrison. Spencer later shows up as a poor person in the care of John Smith from 1827-1830. In October 1831 he shows up as being in the care of Asbury Broadwell. It is assumed that Spencer died between October 1831 and October 1832.
James and Joseph continued to live in Harrison Co. KY through 1836 when James sold the last of his land on Feb 11, 1836 to William Latimer. The family migrated to Decatur Co. IN where Josephs son Henry had gone in 1832.
Family history holds that Spencer Mozingo was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and "went from Culpeper Co. VA". His sons Joseph and Thomas Mozingo (Mazingo) were soldiers in the War of 1812, although Joseph "went from Ky" and Thomas "went from VA". Nothing has been found to prove these statements.
There are many descendants of Spence (Spencer) Mozingo living today and they are spread over the entire United States. Many still live in Decatur, IN and the surrounding area.

... I believe that this Thomas Mozingo comes directly from a History on Decatur Co., IN. In this history it mentions Milla as the wife of Thomas. I personnally believe that whoever the author interviewed for this information confused the the husband of Millie. James Mozingo m. Mildred Clemmons in Orange Co., VA just as Joseph m. Polly Clemmons in the same county and time period. Early 1800s. I've found no other mention of a Thomas Mozingo in Decatur Co., IN records or Orange Co., VA in these time periods. James Mozingo died in Decatur Co., IN and his will is recorded there 22 Jun 1849.

Spencer is on the tax lists of Orange Co., VA through 1803 and had an agreement recorded in Orange Co., VA deed books in 1805. By 1808 Spencer is on the Bourbon Co., KY tax lists and by 1817 he is on the Harrison Co., KY tax lists along with both James and Joseph Mozingo. (He is on the Bourbon Co. 1810 Census.) 1818 is the last year I saw Spencer on the tax rolls for Harrison. He was listed as having land in Harrison, but he is not listed on the general land index for Harrison Co. This is the point at which I am. I would love to find that disposition of this land. ... ...Spencer Mozingo was found to be father of: Joseph [1774 - 1836], James [1780 - 1849], Mary [1784 - 1845], and Ellen [1785 - ca. 1851-59]. Later, I confirmed other researcher[s]' findings of another son: Benjamin [about 1798-____]. The mother's name has not been found, she passed away before 1820 in Harrison County, Kentucky. Researchers have indicated other possible sons of: Thomas [1775-1830] and Henry. To date, I have not been able to find any direct connection for Thomas to Spencer. The War of 1812 records in the Library of Virginia list a Thomas Mozingo and a Pierce B. Mozingo with a Virginia pension. ... I added John to Joseph's children because he just happens to be there and got married to Mary Ann Mozingo [assumed of James based on James' will] in 1832, Harrison County, Kentucky."
