INDEX

His name is remembered by the Swaby family as "Frederich." His complete name, as given above, had always been available in the Swaby family Bible, but unfortunately written by hand in the old German script (Sütterlinschrift). The entries in the Bible were either made by him or his wife, with some interesting omissions (such as his father and two of his children). It is also odd that he married his wife in 1850, probably after coming to America in the great 1848 migration. In the United States, he was mostly referred to as "Fred," and there is mention in the 1850 of someone with his name and age living alone in New York City. Northampton, Massachusetts, was one of the furthest places you could go by train from New York City in those days and had the reputation of being a paradise. Apparently, Fred went there one day and stayed there, meeting his future wife, also a German, and marrying her there. An extraordinary early tin type was found in the Swaby family photos which is captioned on the back as Fred and his father. If so, the photograph must have been taken in Germany and was probably one of the few possessions he carried with him to the United States.
