INDEX

She is listed in the 1880 census as "Mary Schwabe" with her place of birth listed as "MECLENBURG." This is an error that caused confusion in this research, not to mention misspelling her mother's maiden name as "Trunt" instead of "Trunk" (based on the penmanship of the Sütterlinschrift in the family Bible).
Family stories about Alfred's six siblings depict many adventures. Mary married Frank M. Camp and resided in Tuscola, Michigan, supposedly the parents of two pretty girls, one of them a trained opera singer (Belle Camp). Augustus (or "Gus") is listed in the 1880 census as working in a drug store at age 19, although he later disappeared and never wrote home (the family even rumored that he started Schwab Pharmacy in Hollywood--he didn't); record of Gus working in San Francisco and dying there in 1944 depict a more modest lifestyle for him. Oscar Heinrich married twice but did not have any children. Helen married Albert C. Wetzel. Anna was a harpist and organist who married twice with no children. Family photos show another girl, Ella, who never married and lived first with her sister Mary, then with Anna.
