Because the Bentleys of Rhode Island are such an enormous clan and the name "William Bentley" is so frequent, this is a confusing line to research. After much correspondence with Bentley genealogists, most notably the published articles of the late Dr. Beaman, this line should be correct as it now stands. Still, there are many conflicting accounts of dates and other details.
This William Bentley came to America in 1671 on the ship Arabella as servant to Richard Sprague. William Bentley and forty-one others of Narragansett sent a petition to the King, praying that "he would put an end to those differences about the government thereof, which has been so fatal to the prosperity of the place; animosity still arising in the people's minds, as they stand affected to this or that government" (dated - July 29, 1679). Followed currying trade.
Efforts by some genealogists to show that this William Bentley's father, another William Bentley whose wife was named Mary, may have also died in Rhode Island around 1691. This may have been from another Bentley line (the Bentley who married Mary Eliot, along with another line that includes a William Bentley who married Sarah Leithfield).
