INDEX

Because the Bentleys of Rhode Island are such an enormous clan and the name "William Bentley" is so frequent, this is a confusing line to research. After much correspondence with Bentley genealogists, extracting the safest, most reliable pedigree becomes very difficult; there are obviously many conflicting accounts of dates and other details. Most notably, there must be another "William Bentley" from the same area of Rhode Island who married Mary Eliot and his line is often combined with this William Bentley who married first Elizabeth (Gardiner) and whose will was proved in 12 AUG 1760 by his surviving wife Bathsheba Bentley (also widow of Israel Lewis). In other words, many accounts have this William Bentley marrying all three wives (Elizabeth Gardiner, Mary Eliot and Bathsheba Noyes Greene Lewis) even though that would have to mean that the marriage to Elizabeth would have been too brief to have produced as many children as is mentioned in his will (wedding bans for the other William Bentley and Mary Eliot were published 21 APR 1703). Bathsheba had seven children with Israel Lewis that were oddly not mentioned in the will.
Will proved August 12, 1760. (by Governor after petition May 1760). Executrix wife Bathsheba.
