INDEX

"Bolton cum Redmire" refers to the double parish of Castle Bolton and Redmire (sometimes the registers were separately kept, sometimes jointly). William must have moved the family to Leeds sometime before 1841 since the censuses in Swaledale do not show his family. He moved to America in 1842, settling in western Pennsylvania around 1847. Sometime later, he moved to Scales Mound, Illinois, near Galena, in search of work in the lead mines (one of the mainstay economies of his motherland in Swaledale). He died of pneumonia shortly after moving his family to Argyle.
