THE STORY BEHIND THE BAND
The band started in 1985, but it`s story goes way back before that. Jim and Greg first met in a grade 11 math class in a Toronto high school. They became friends, but didn`t form a band until later. Much later.
They went to university, then formed their first band - the HiFis. They recorded a couple songs, such as "I Don`t Know Why You Love Me" and "Look What You`ve Done". (Click on the title to hear a clip of the song.)
After the HiFis, they moved down to New York City in 1981 and formed Fly To France. I don`t think any songs were released.
Then it was back up to Toronto to form Blue Rodeo. Cleave was the first person asked to join. He brought along his friend Bazil Donovan. Bazil had also replied to their ad in NOW magazine. The now famous ad was: "If you`ve dropped acid at least 20 times, lost 3 or 4 years to booze and looking good and can still manage to keep time, call Jim or Greg." The Greg brought Bobby Wiseman, who is their friend Howie`s younger brother, to a rehearsal, and the band was complete. Well...almost! They still needed a name.
The name just kind of came to them one day and they went with it. They wanted a country sounding name to underline the little bit of country sound in their music.
They debuted in Feburary of 1985 at the Rivoli in Toronto. Now they`re regulars at the Horseshoe Tavern, and have played there more then any other band!
Since then, they`ve won awards, travelled around the world, recorded many wonderful songs, and created a large fan base (which keeps on growing!). Way to go guys, keep it up!!!
