In the last 5 centuries, there have been not only various places where colonies lay, but also that of the types of colonies.
Colonies of Settlement, Colonies of Exploitation, and
what might be called Contested Settlement Colonies (CSC) were
the bulk of them. The British empire alone included colonies of settlement (Virgina, Massachusetts, New Zealand, New
South Wales), colonies of exploitation (Nigieria, Jamaica, Malaya), a preexisting empire (India), contested settlement
colonies (Kenya), and spheres of influence (Argentina). This section will explain these colonies for what they did for the
empires that controlled them.
