Namilyango College offers a curriculum designed to give students opportunities and challenges to prepare them for employment and further education. Courses prepare students to deal with rapid technological change, to solve problems, to become acquainted with facts and opinions, and to acquire necessary information. In addition, our courses foster values such as honesty, integrity, self-respect, responsibility, and active participation in our democratic society and community. These traits are reinforced in extracurricular activities, athletics, and other events around the College. ENGLISH The main language medium for learning at Namilyango College is English. In addition to a substantial number of formal English lessons, all subjects, with the exception of Luganda and French, are taught in English. Students are also encouraged to use English at all other times during the school day. This gives them abundant opportunities to improve their language skills. MATHEMATICS Mathematics is a core subject of the
curriculum and of vital importance to students of all ages and abilities.
The subject is taught using a variety of methods including formal classroom
teaching, practical work, experimental work, investigations and exploratory
activities. SCIENCES Scientific innovation continues to accelerate the pace of change in today's technological society. At Namilyango College the responsibility to prepare students for the challenges of life in the twenty-first century is recognised and fulfilled. Students are provided with the knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to make sense of the world around them and solve problems in a practical and investigative way. The important Science subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Agriculture. HUMANITIES Namilyango College recognises the importance of the humanities, a term used to describe subjects which deal with the development and character of human society in the context of the physical world. Important humanities subjects include History, Geography, Political Education, and Christian Religious Education. These subjects enable students to learn about their countries, their origins and their cultures. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY The academic curriculum of Namilyango College places great stress on information technology which is concerned with storing, processing and presenting information by electronic means including computers. Information technology has applications in every part of the curriculum at the College. Throughout the College students are given opportunities to develop confidence in keyboard skills and the use of a variety of computer software as well as in handling audio-visual equipment. Computer Studies has become a very essential subject at the College. BUSINESS STUDIES In the fast moving world of the 21st century, a thorough understanding of economies, businesses and accounting practices will be essential. The business studies team offers courses (Economics and Commerce) that will prepare our students for this challenging future. They are given the opportunity to study how businesses are organised, how the global economy operates and how businesses are financed. MODERN LANGUAGES Through learning to speak French, students gain first hand experience of a foreign culture. The ability to communicate in a foreign language is an asset that can be developed and put to use by students in their personal lives, both at home and overseas. At Namilyango College, French is taught by specialist teachers from Year 1 to Year 4 and the subject is available as an option. FINE ART The expressive arts at Namilyango College aim to develop in each student an ability to appreciate and gain pleasure from a wide variety of art. In the classroom the students experience the practical and theoretical aspects of the arts including drawing and painting, graphics and designing, writing and script writing. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Namilyango College encourages sporting prowess and all students take part in physical education. A carefully structured programme of skills teaching, and games is used to encourage the development of the level of proficiency necessary for participation in the thriving extra-curricular sports programme.
