Fishing in the surf is one of the most enjoyable ways to "get back to nature". Standing in the breakers, feeling the breeze on your face, and the occassional bump of a fish at your ankles....all of this adds up to a day of relaxation for you, but a day of wear and tear on your equipment. This is why you really need the correct rod and reel, line, lures, and bait.
Personally, I use ten to twelve foot rods for surf fishing. As far as reels go, I use a heavy spinning reel or a Penn Squidder Casting reel. These reels are heavy-duty, and because of their gears, they can take alot of punishment. This type of combination ensures a long cast.
One good maintenance tip
for your rod and reel:
After a day of surf fishing,
always wash your rod and reel with fresh water
and follow up with a spraying of WD-40.
When it comes to choice of line, something my granddad taught me always sticks in my mind. "Son", he said, "a fisherman is only as good as his line. When the line breaks, there's no longer a need for rod, reel, or fisherman." There is nothing but the truth in that! So many times, right before pulling in a 30 pound blue....pop....there goes my line, rig, and fish. A good, sturdy line, that I use, is 15lb spiderwire. I have the most luck with this.

The last piece of equipment I want to talk about is bait. I use all kinds of bait, live and cut. Shrimp, bloodworms, minnows, mullets, just to name a few. Live pinfish are good for blues. Below I have listed some fish with the type of bait or lure I would use. On further down, be sure to click on the links. They will give you info on all fishing equipment.
