THE ENTRIES TO THE COMPETITIONS
Now we can see how the entries are determined for each Cup.
UEFA SUPER CUP
This cup is the easiest of them all.
It is played by the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup champions. It is played as one game final in Monaco at the end of the August, just after the Qualification Rounds in UCL and UC.
This cup used be played by the European Champions’ Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup winners and the status was changed after the Cup Winners’ Cup was discontinued.
The tie was also played as two-legged competition in earlier years.
UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
This competition is designed for 73 clubs.
72 of the clubs are determined using the Country Rankings.
If the Title Holder can not make the 72 club roster, then they are added as 73rd club. The entries:
4 clubs from the countries ranked 1 to 3 (4*3=12),
3 clubs from the countries ranked 4 to 6 (3*3=9),
2 clubs from the countries ranked 7 to 15 (2*9=18),
1 club from the countries ranked 16 to 48 (1*33=33)
Of 51 member countries, Liechtenstein is off the rankings since they do not have a league competition in their country and can not play in UCL. The countries ranked 49th and 50th also can not compete since they are not ranked high enough. These two countrýes’s champions are allowed to enter to the UC.
The use of Title Holder entry:
If the Title Holder made the first 72 clubs, then this entry is not used.
If the Title Holder is from the first three countries in the ranking and didn’t qualify in the 72 club roster, then they qualified as their first club and drop the fourth club from the entry roster, since no country can have more than 4 entries.
UEFA CUP
The entries to the UEFA Cup are determined after determining the UCL entries.
There are several ways the clubs can have an entry to UC.
1 – Entries according to the UEFA Country Rankings: Each member country which has a cup competition in their countries sends their cup winner to UCL. Liechtenstein doesn’t have a league competition, but they do have a cup competition and their winner has an entry to UC.
The countries also have different number of entries to UCL according to their rankings in the Country standing.
3 clubs – 1 Cup + 2 League – from the countries ranked 1 to 6 (3*6=18),
4 clubs – 1 Cup + 3 League – from the countries ranked 7 to 8 (4*2=8),
2 clubs – 1 Cup + 1 League – from the countries ranked 9 to 15 (2*7=14),
3 clubs – 1 Cup + 2 League – from the countries ranked 16 to 21 (3*6=18),
2 clubs – 1 Cup + 1 League – from the countries ranked 22 to 48 (2*27=54)
Cup clubs’ eligibility:
The cup winner of each country has an entry to the UC, if they don’t have an entry to UCL.
If they do, then the losing cup finalist of that country will have an entry to UC, if they don’t have an entry to UCL.
If both finalists have entry to UCL, then no cup entry is used and League entries are increased by one.
Legue Clubs’ eligibility:
The league entries are filled using the last final league standing. The UCL winners and the cup clubs entering UC are crossed out and the league entries are filled from the top.
Some countries like England, France, and Scotland have another competition in their countries called League Cup. They also reserve one entry to the winners of these cups, if they haven’t had an entry already.
(Note: The League Cup is a cup competition for all the clubs of the pro-leagues, where the National Cup competition is the cup competition for all clubs, pro and amateur combined.)
2 – Title Holder: The Title Holder will have an entry if they didn’t have an entry to UCL or UC so far.
3 – UEFA Intertoto Cup entries: The three winners of the UIC have an entry to UC.
4 – UEFA Fair Play Competition entries: Three Fair Play winners of their countries have an entry to UC. The countries are determined from the UEFA Fair Play Competition. The Competition winner and the two other countries with 8.00 or higher Fair Play rankings can send their Fair Play winners.
5 – The League winners of 49th and 50th countries: These two clubs couldn’t have an entry to UCL, since their country rankings were not high enough. They get an entry to UC.
6 – UCL Losers: 16 Qualification Round 3 losers and the 8 third place finishers of League Stage 1 are admitted to UC.
UEFA INTERTOTO CUP
This cup is designed for 60 clubs. Liechtenstein is not eligible again since they do not have a league.
2 clubs from the countries ranked 1 to 12 (2*12=24),
1 club from the countries ranked 13 to 48 (1*36=36)
Because of the scheduling some countries do not want to play in UIC and their unused entries are used by the countries requesting extra entry.
