Here is what I have done for the search so far...

November '94

Called one of my Aunts. She then told me that his name was Charles Stevens, with a nic-name of "Chuck". That she had wanted to tell me for years, but my Uncle wouldn't let her, until I was older. She told me that Charles and my mother attended Indiana State Barbering College together. And that it was not a "known" relationship. (not so much as an affair).

Send letter to Indiana Professional Licensing Angency, requesting information. I then recieved letter back from David Carter/office administrator. He had said that there were no names licensed by the name of Charles Stevens. Which probably meant that Charles was not licensed in the state of Indiana any longer. That I would have to request a letter of statement for previous years searched.

April '96

April 9....I went on vacation to Indiana. Located the Barbering college. I met the director of the college. She rememberd my mother and father. She verified that Charles was my father. She told me to phone her the following day, that she was going to try to get me more information.

April 10...I called her back the next day, she then gave me his name, middle inital, and a known address in Indiana...which was.... 1616 Penn St, Indianapolis... and also, 8285 East Street, Route 46, Bloomington, Indiana. And that he was licensed as a barber in the state of Georgia.

Aptil 22....I sent letters to Vital Records/birth records and Indiana Professional Agency (for more info) and Freedom of Information Officer requestion Charles form SS5. and Social Security Adminisrtartion/Missing Persons to forward a letter to Charles. As well as Georgia Professional Licensing Board, requesting information to clerify information that he was licensed in Georgia as a barber.

May '96

May 3...Recieved a letter back from Vital Records, sent appication for birth certificate. Also recieved letter back from Indiana Prof Lic Agcy. Both said they did not provide information requested.

May 8...Mailed out 4 more letters...1) Methodist Hospital for my birth records to see if any information was on my birth records. 2)Indiana Barbering College to the Director, to see if she could gather more information. 3)Indiana Prof. Lic. Angcy. /David Carter-adm. another attempt of request for information. 4)Sent a bland envelope to last address known of Charles, on the envelope I put "Forwarding address requested".

May 13...Called the Church of Jesus Christ of Laterday Saints in Georgia. Set an apointment to go up there to go look at the social security index.

May 13....Wrote 3 more letters... 1) International Soundex Region Reg.-to register and recieve form 2) Indiana State Library/Acrhives Division-requesting any information that they could find. 3) Salvation Army Social Service Dept./missing persons bureau-to forward letter to him, sent photo copies of pictures and s.a.s.e. for reply.

May 16 I went to Morman Church. Found a Charles B Stevens with date of birth and date of death, ssn (all listed above).

May 17... Mailed letter to Kentucky Dept of Human recourses, requesting a copy of death certificate.

May 20....Recieved letter back from Bloomington, address (above) with "forwarding address unknown".

May 21....Called Courior Journal in Louisville to recieve a copy of obituray.

May 23.... Recieved a phone call from Vital Records asking what information I needed. They told me that Methodist Hospital had forwarded my letter to them. Also recieved letter from Archives Division letting me know how to get more information.

May 28.... Recieved letter back from Kentucky Vital Records- stated that no records were found. That the death records may not have been filed by the funeral director.

June '96

June 6...Recieved letter from Courior Journal of Kentucky. There was no obituary for Charles around the dates given.

June 10.... Recieved two letters... 1)Methodist Hospital- they do not keep medical records past 8 years. 2) Soc. Sec Adm/Missing persons- Verified that he passed away in March '88.

June 12... Recieved letter from Salvation Army- They could not forward letter due to "geanalogy purposes".

June 27... Recieved copy of Form SS-5.

June 28... Called Indiana Vital Records- they said that I could not have copy of birth or death certificate, because there is no "proof" that he is my biological father. I have to wait 75 years past his date of birth/death befor they will release information.

1997

A friend of mine did a search on the internet for me, for I did not have a computer at the time. She somehow found that Charles passed away in Missouri. I have not done anything in that direction as yet.

My all time dream is to locate information on his family. So that I may talk to them, even if it's only once. I am happily married, and a mother of three children. I lost my mother when I was 16 years due to cancer. Only then did she tell me my fathers name, and that they attended Barbering College together. Over the years, and with the loss of my mother, I had forgotten she told me that much. This is why I called my Aunt a few years later. My mother was going to locate him when I got older, and would be mautre enought to understand their situation. But she passed before we had the chance (in 1983). My mother never married, so she raised me on her own.

I am also promising that if I ever do get to speak with his family over the phone, I will stess that I do not wish to cause any harships.

I hope you can help me. Putting this site up is a last resort, for all other avenues in my serach have come to an end. I do not have the money to pay for a Private Investigator. Therefore, I have done all this, and more in the searching on information.

UPDATE ~1999~

Once again, I opend my books and jumped in, head first. This time, only more determined than ever before.
I had gone and posted on a couple of "Missing persons" message boards. Asking for any other guidence on what I should do.
I recieved a couple of emails in response, (thank you to all that replied.. *smlie*). But there was this one man, his name is Nick. He sent me a letter telling me that he would like for me to go over my search with me, and asked me to telephone him, and left me his home phone number.
So, I phoned him. He was a very nice and conciderate man. *smile* While he had me on the phone, I think he may have known how "sceptical" I was about this, so he asked me my name. I gave it to him, but only after he said
"Listen, I am going to pull up some of your information to show you that I am "for real", and show you the things that I can do for you in your search."
Well, I was very shocked at the things he pulled up on me. *grin*

May 9, 1999...Well, through my journey of all that hard work, it seems that I have the wrong information on Charles Stevens.
And I provided Nick with the wrong information to do the search. So, when Nick and I were able to pull up some information, and located someone who we thought may be a relative, that is when we found out that we had the wrong Charles...
*sigh*
So, we are back to square one. We do know for a fact that Charles attended Indiana Barbering College in or around the years of 1965-66 (and his nic-name was "Chuck"). But the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency cannot provide me with any detail information because I do not have Charles' Social Security Number.
If there is any way that you could help provide information, I would greatly apreciate it.
Thank You

(more coming soon)
