The Major Deegan Expressway is the southern extension of
Interstate 87, known as the New York State Thruway north of the
Bronx, New York. It runs down the Bronx between Riverdale, Marble Hill
and Kingbridge to the west and Woodlawn and Fordham in the East
until the Harlem River catches up to it. It then follows the
river south, past University Heights and Yankee Stadium, down
towards the Triboro Bridge and the Mott Haven section of the
South Bronx. Just north of the stadium, it forms the lower part
of a spectacular spaghetti-ramped interchange with the Cross
Bronx Expressway, which soars over it on its way into Manhattan
on the Alexander Hamilton Bridge. The original Deegan was a relatively
short affair built in the mid 30's as a Triboro Bridge approach
road extending from the Grand Concourse. It was widened and extended
north up to Yonkers in the 50's. |
