Adventure 2
Farmer Maggot's hospitality...
After the second Black Rider scare, we thought it best to not travel on the road. I decided the fastest short cut would be to go over the fields between Woody End and Brandywine River ferry. We walked for a long time, and at some point during the day heard two chilling screams, which we figured were the Riders talking to each other. It only made us move faster.
We eventually came across familiar ground, which we then realized was Farmer Maggot's garden. (I stole Farmer Maggot's mushrooms as a young Hobbit, and am still to this day terrified of his dogs.) Luckily, the old Farmer recognized Pippin as a friend and invited us all in for dinner. Over dinner he told us of a tall black man on a tall black horse earlier in the day asking for "Baggins." Now we were even more frightened and ready to leave. Farmer Maggot offered to carry us to the ferry in a covered wagon. We hid under blankets in his wagon and slowly started the journey. On the way we heard more hoof steps, but it was only Merry, ready to take us across the river and over to Buckland.
