~THE LITTLE BOX~

I was cleaning out a closet
When I saw the little box
I gently removed it from the shelf
And opened the flowered top

I picked up the watch that lay there
And held it in my hands
I gently rubbed the little shark
That belong to my little man

I opened up the "letter"
He'd written for me on Mother's Day
Tears started to slide down my face
Thinking of the day my child went away

I saw the signature of "Andy"
With the "Y" written backwards
I smiled as I remembered our lesson
When he was learning to write his words

I stared at the hands on the watch
The little hands locked in time
For the watch stopped running
The day God let me know, "He's Mine."

Tucked in the corner was a marble
The one he loved so much
The "cat eye" I'd given to him
One day when we had lunch

I touched the old faded paper
Of a card he once made me
I saw where it said, Mom I love you
Forever and ever.......love me

I think about forever and ever
And what the words mean to me
Our love can't be severed by time
For either of us, you see

And in the other corner of the box
Folded and tied with yarn
Was the picture he'd given me
The last night as I held him in my arms

The picture of a shark he'd drawn
And said, Mom, don't look at it yet
Put it away until later
I did, after his death

That shark is now engraved
In a stone on a grave far away
Drawn by a little five year old
From a request he made that day

I almost didn't see
The photo in the box
Of a time long ago
Tucked beneath the special watch

It was one of him and I
Taken on a day long ago
With both our grins so happy
It made my heart ache so

I slowly put everything back
And slid the box back on the shelf
The "memories" I got today
Are special to myself

I get out the box when I'm lonely
Or when I need to think and smile
It always helps me to endure
My memories are always on file
