LIVERPOOL PAIR 'PLOTTED GERMAN MUTINY' SAYS MATTHAUS
27 June 2000 - London

by 365 Staff

The defender used a German newspaper interview to finger the Anfield pair - currently also involved in a row over late-night drinking during the tournament - and midfielder Jens Jeremies as the prime movers of the plot.

Matthaus said: "They wanted me to take over the squad before the competition started. However, I didn’t want to get rid of the coach. I have no experience of coaching but I did call Franz Beckenbauer and asked him for his advice.” Beckenbauer, who is leading Germany's 2006 World Cup bid, reportedly hit the roof when told of the 'ditch Ribbeck' campaign, ending any likelihood of it succeeding.

The revelations, if true, would put any future German caps for Hamann and Babbel in serious doubt. The former is already in the doghouse after reportedly being spotted in a Cologne bar in the early hours of the morning following Germany's Euro 2000 opener against Romania and then participating in a 5am drinking session following their humiliating 3-0 defeat by Portugal.

GERMANY : Who ARE these guys in the white shirts? I think the real German team has been shunted in a train down a siding in Hamburg somewhere. They are now waking up from several nights of card games, dark beer and liebfraumilch and will arrive in Charleroi shortly and send these pretenders back to the Bundeslegia Div 2 whence they came surely!! What on earth is Lothar Matthaeus doing on a competitive soccer field? Has everyone lost their minds in the German coaching camp? They were fortunate to escape with a draw and can only get better. What a betrayal of a stunning tradition these arrivistes are! Can the pipeline of young players really be this badly clogged? No answers to all the above. As said above, Germany-England could make us forget all the horrors of Act One.

Ribbeck stands by his man

"Against England, it's all or nothing," said Erich Ribbeck as his team prepare for the crucial clash in Charleroi. The Germany coach seems determined to play Lothar Matthäus from the start on Saturday, despite his marginal influence during Germany's first game against Romania, and despite rumours of unrest about the veteran's inclusion among other squad members.

Discontent in the ranks
According to many observers, Ribbeck's big mistake is picking players who are not fit. Matthäus is the focus of discontent, not least within the German squad itself if rumours are to be believed. When asked if the other players did not want the 39-year-old libero in the team, captain Oliver Bierhoff 's reply did little to silence the rumour-mongers. "I am loathe to say it here and now," the Milan AC striker said. "The coach has said he will listen to our opinions and everyone will get the chance to get off his chest what he wants to say. We will speak to him in private and I hope he listens."
