What Do They Know
*******************************************************
Dian roughly wiped the tears from her eyes. She let the pencil fly across the paper. She just couldn't take it anymore.

Flashback
"Dian! Don't let him do this to you!" Brian told her as her tears fell.
"I love him Bri. More than anything!" Dian tried to explain
"If he feels the same about you he wouldn't leave you like this all the time." Brian tried to reason with her.
"It's not his fault he can't control his schedule." Dian said.
"But, if he really loved you he wouldn't let you be alone all the time. He wouldn't make you wait for him." Brian pleaded with her.
End Flashback

She paused a minute to think of what exactly she should write to him. Two years could hardly be summed up in a single letter.

Flashback
"It will never work. Between him being gone and the fact that you're mere existence to him is a secret, it's not going to work!" Brian fumed.
Dian turned her face from him. Why was everyone so sure that it would never work? Why couldn't they just let them be happy? "Brian, how can you say that?" she asked her friend.
"Everyone sees it but you Dian." He sighed.
"I love him Brian." She replied simply.
"Maybe it isn't enough." He answered.
End Flashback

She folded the paper neatly and wrote his name neatly across the top of the envelope. They were all right. Maybe love just wasn't enough.

Flashback
"I love you Dian!" Brian practically yelled at her, "Why can't you open your eyes and see all the things that I can give you that he's not here for?!?!" Dian looked at him in shock.
"Don't say those kind of things Brian." She whispered.
"Why not? Because you're too devoted to a guy who is here for you once very two months? Or maybe because you're afraid that I'm right." He taunted her.
"Yes." She answered simply.
End Flashback

Even though things had gotten a little better, she was now on tour with him, she was still told it wasn't good enough. Never did she really feel that way, but everyone around her seemed to think differently. She carefully laid the note on his pillow and took one last look around.

Flashback
"How can you say that you love him?" Brian demanded.
"It's easy. I feel it inside me." Dian answered.
"He's never here. How can you really know?" he asked.
"When you love somebody you never question it." She replied.
End Flashback

Lance climbed on to he bus tired and needing sleep. His eyes searched the small area for her. 'She's probably off somewhere.' He thought and climbed into his bunk. The crunch under his head caused him to sit up. He pulled the now crumpled letter from under his head. His name was written at the top in her perfect script.

Flashback "Why are you so good to me?" Lance asked her in almost a whisper.
"Because I love you and that's all there is to it."
She smiled and leaned in.
End Flashback

He carefully read the note. Her perfume still lingered in the air even on the paper. She couldn't be far. He stood up and ran out of the bus.
'Lance~
For a long time I believed that as long as we had each other and love everything else would just fall into place. But it hasn't. You're gone too much and I find myself wondering if you really do love me. I will never be able to deny that my heart belongs to you. It's just better this way. Everyone says so.
Always,
Dian'
Dian shuffled along the street towards the hotel where she would stay until her flight left the next morning. She wondered if what she was doing was right.

Flashback
"He'll be fine without you Dian." Brian assured her, "Worry about yourself. Are you truly happy?"
End Flashback

She knew that she really was and always had been. But, it was too late now. Surely everyone else knew what was best for her. Then she heard his deep soft voice in her mind
"I love you." Why couldn't she let that be enough why did she let others run her life.
"Dian!" Lance called when he saw her. She turned slowly around to face him.
"Please baby, please." He gasped for breath, "don't leave, whatever it is we can make it work.
"It's never going to work Lance. You're always gone and you ,you.." she tried to explain.
"If that's how you fell why didn't you ever tell me?" he asked.
"I don't know." She mumbled.
"Is that how you feel?" Lance asked. She looked down at her feet. He gently raised her head to look at him.
"Dian? Is that how you feel?" He asked again.
"Well it's how everyone tells me I feel and they know right? I mean they love me and know what's best." She almost questioned.
"How do YOU feel?" he urged her.
"I..I..I love you Lance. I want to make things work. You're all I want." She breathed.
"Then why did you leave?" he questioned confused.
"Because everyone else.." she began.
"Don't listen to them. What do they know?" he asked.
She finally raised her eyes to meet his.
"We need each other to have, to hold." She quietly repeated the familiar lyrics. He smiled at her comment.
"Do you really want to leave? Because you know I only want what's best for you." He told her.
"I don't want to leave. I want to be where ever you are." she answered.
"You're sure?"
"With all my heart." She answered.
He took her longingly into his arms. She rested her head naturally on his chest. He cradled her and slightly rocked. "Be with me always."
"Always." He promised.

Now wasn't that sweet?
