Julie no longer had a choice--tonight she would have to tell the truth, no matter what happened, no matter how much it hurt.

Julie Price was a very quiet and reserved girl. She never really expressed her feelings much. She was what you would call an outsider now a days. She didn’t have very many friends, except for two. Her best friend in the world was Christopher Kirkpatrick. They had lived next door to each other since the second grade and they had always been so close. Even when Chris moved further out of town and into the country. It wasn’t until their freshman year of high school, that they were categorized as boyfriend and girlfriend. Julie would always tell Chris her problems no matter what they were. He was always so understanding and munificent towards her. Although she could tell him anything, she wasn’t quite sure how she was going to tell him this. Tonight she had to tell him her problem because there may never be another chance.

Julie paced the floor trying to think of how she was going to tell him. She would, on occasion, look at the phone and start to pick it up, but then she would draw her hand away. She stop pacing the floor and looked straight at the phone. It seemed like forever before she took at deep breath and mustered up the courage to call. Her trembling hand dialed the all too familiar seven digit number.

"Hello." Chris’s sleepy voice rang.

"Hey, sweetie. Did I wake you?" She said in a quiet phonation.

He jolted up on his bed, becoming wide awake at the tone of her voice, "No, no don’t be silly. You sound upset. What’s wrong?" He asked concerned.

"Umm...well..." She trailed off as her eyes became glazed over.

"Julie, what’s wrong?" He looked around his room for comfort as he awaited her reply.

"Chris I have to tell you something and..." She was interrupted by him before she could finish.

"Julie, if it’s about the fight we had the other night I am so sorry. I feel terrible about that. Or if it’s about another guy, please don’t tell me it’s another guy.." He kept rambling on and on as she wiped her eyes.

"No Chris it’s not about the fight and it’s not another guy." She reassured him as a sigh of relief was released from his throat.

"Then what is it? You know you can tell me anything."

"I don’t want to tell you over the phone. Can you come over so I can tell you face to face?" She asked; hopefulness filling her voice.

"Yea, sure give me five minutes and I’ll be right there. I love you." He said softly as he hung up the phone.

"I love you too." She said to the phone as a new batch of tears cascaded down her reddened face.

Chris tottered around his room trying to find his car keys. He told Julie five minutes. He was never late for anything, why start now.

"Where are my keys?" He asked out loud as he fumbled through some papers on his desk, hoping they were there, "Jeez, I’m going to be late." He was really pent-up now.

"Looking for these?" His little brother Mathew asked as he jangled the keys in the air.

"Yes! Thanks, Buddy." He grabbed the keys from his brother and messed up his hair before running down the stairs and out the door, slamming it behind him.

He pulled up to her house and saw a figure in the window up stairs with their hands pressed against the glass. He knew it was her. He looked more closely at her figure and saw a frown upon her lips and sadness in her eyes. He frowned at the sight as he got out of his car and proceeded towards the front door. He knocked ever so lightly as the door opened.

"Hello Ms. Price. I’m here to see Julie." He said as he placed his hands in his pockets.

"It’s a little late Chris." She retorted. Chris was about to say something until Julie’s figure appeared at the top of the stairs.

"It’s okay mom, I told him to come." She watched as Chris made his way past her mother and up the stairs. He outstretched his arms and embraced her in a comforting hug. This made her start to cry again. Knowing that this wasn’t going to last forever. She pulled away and grabbed his hand. They walked into her bedroom and he sat down on her bed waiting for her news.

"Chris I have something very awful to tell you.." She began as she looked at the floor and played with her fingers.

"Just tell me please." He wrapped and arm around her shoulders as she sat beside him. Her tears and sobs were coming uncontrollably now. She took a deep breath and turned to face him.

"Chris, I don’t want you’re pity after I tell you this, okay?" He simply nodded.

"Chris, I have cancer. I’ve lied to you about why I get sick all the time. I didn’t know how to tell you. But it’s gotten worse and I thought that this was my last chance to tell you so I took it." She searched his face for an answer, but found none. He was speechless. For the first time in his life he was speechless. Her chin quivered as she looked at him.

"Chris, please, say something." She begged, her voice shaking.

"Oh my God Julie. Oh my God." He didn’t know what to say. So many thoughts and emotions were running through his head, he couldn’t think clearly. He took her hand and knelt on his knees between her legs He looked up into her blue, bloodshot eyes and wiped her excess tears away. He spoke softly to her.

"Julie, we’re going to get through this no matter what. I love you and I’m going to be by your side through it all, I promise." He gently kissed her lips and ran his fingers through her soft blond hair.

~*~*~*~*~

A month had past and Julie was in the hospital. The doctor said she didn’t have much time left. Chris kept his promise and stuck by her through all her treatments and all her crying sessions. It was December 24th, Christmas Eve, and Chris was going to stay with her in the hospital. He brought her a bouquet of flowers and her Christmas present. He gently pushed her door opened and peered inside at the sleeping figure. He put the flowers and her present down on the table. He stealthy walked over to the side of her bed and pulled up a chair. He took her hand in his left and gently ran his right hand over her hair.

"I love you Julie. You can’t leave me. You here me? We promised to grow old together." He said as tears ran down his cheeks. She moved slightly and her eyes flickered open.

"Hey Sleeping Beauty." He greeted in a whisper.

"Hey Prince." She smiled and kissed his hand.

"I brought you some flowers and your Christmas present." He reached over and picked up the nicely wrapped present off the table.

"Chris you didn’t have to. I didn’t get you anything." She said in a raspy voice.

"I know, but I wanted to." He kissed her on the cheek and gave her her present. "Open it." He smiled.

She delicately unwrapped the paper and say a white box inside. She hesitated and finally opened it. Tears came to her eyes as she say the small silver ring inside.

"Oh, Chris it’s beautiful." He took the ring from her hand and looked into her eyes.

"Julie, no matter what happens and where you go, I want you to know that...you’ll always be my first love. No matter what" He slipped the ring on her finger and kissed her on the lips. She closed her eyes for a second and then opened them back up to see his brown eyes staring at her sympathetically as tears ran down his cheeks. They stayed like that, staring at one another, knowing what was going to happen. Julie was the first to speak, "Chris I have to go." She whispered as her tears became heavy.

"Shh, I know you do sugar. But not yet, not now." He laid his head on her stomach and she played with his hair. Her breaths started getting shorter and shorter. And Chris looked up into her eyes, his chin trembling.

"Chris, I want you to know something..." She started and then took a deep breath, "I will always love you and look after you, no matter what. Just remember...Whenever, Wherever, Forever." He leaned over to where his cheek was resting on hers and whispered, "Always." And with one last squeeze of his hand and one last kiss on his lips, she closed her eyes and slipped away. Chris looked at his watch and realized it read 12:00 p.m.

"She died on Christmas Day." He whispered into the air. He looked up to the ceiling and let his tears flow. He sat there with her hand in his and his head rested on the mattress. His tears continuously subsiding. He would repeat his love for her over and over making sure she knew. He gently got up from his seat and let go of her hand. He gave her one last kiss on the cheek and whispered "We’ll be together again, I promise." And with that he walked to the door and walked out of it, not looking back. Julie's hand blandly fell from the side of the bed and the ring Chris had put on her finger fell to the floor.

THE END!!
