My Only Escape
by Elise

She looked out the window and watched his lights go thru the fog. If she stayed there long enough she would see him come home to. If he came home this time. She knew exactly where he was going. She only didn't know who with. It had long been known that he was using her. As she was using him. Only she wasn't sneaking around. She let him know that they were only "friends with benefits", she wasn't ready for a relationship. Neither was he, he had told her a many of times. But now her feelings were changing. She needed him more and more. She found herself standing there still in the morning hours. He was not back. Weary and tired she decided to go to bed. But not before looking out the window one last time. No one was there. She woke up to noises downstairs. Getting up she tiptoed to the staircase and looked down. He was there with someone else. She wanted to know who this person was, but didn't want him to know that she was awake and saw him. She couldn't see around the banister. Giving up she went back to her room. She awoke again to the door closing and headlights leaving the driveway. He was gone. Probably off to who's ever was here house. She couldn't take it anymore. Fully awake she decided to wait up for him. He came home a few hours later, smelling of alcohol.

"Where have you been?" She asked him.

"Out" was his reply.

She had had enough. She couldn't take it anymore. Getting up to pack a bag she went to walk past him. He knew what she was playing. He grabbed her arm. "Don't even try it." He told her. She went to smack at him but he grabbed her hands and slapped her sending her to the floor. Out side the thunder and lightning cracked making the house light up. He looked up and saw her daughter watching them from the stair case. Turning his attention to the child he started going after her. The child sat paralyzed in fear.

She saw this. He was going to hurt her child. She screamed no at him and went running to her desk. The thunder crackled again and along with it were other noises heard from her hand. He turned towards her holding his chest looking at the blood running down his arm. As he fell to the floor lightning cracked showing her what she had done.

The wind howled covering up her screams of agony and disbelief. She ran to him. Screaming and crying for him to come back. The child looked at her mother and left. Running out the door into the rain. She saw her gun laying in her hand still. Not thinking about her daughter or her future she brought it to her head.

"This is my only escape." she said pulling the trigger.
