She Can't Love you

Sighing in frustration the girl ran her now shaking hand through her golden curls. She knew exactly what was coming next, they both did. It was only a matter of time before something was bound to happen between the two of them. Best friends don’t always make the greatest lovers.

“ Stef you know I love you with all my heart..” Justin started.

“ But not the way you use to." Stefanie finished for him.

“ I understand. I knew this wasn’t a good idea from the beginning." She sighed.

“ But you gave into me." Justin added.

“ The temptation was too strong, we both knew that."

Justin just simply nodded to answer her. He rubbed his face with his hands before sitting up in the bed.

“ I don’t regret anything, it’s just best friends don’t-"

“ Don’t always prove to be lovers." Justin said smirking as he cut her off.

“ Yeah." She said weakly, pushing the covers away from her naked body.

Stefanie climbed out of the bed and collected her pile of clothing off of the floor then quickly and quietly got dressed.

“ We’ll always be best friends you know that Stef. "

“ I know, I never doubted that. "

Stefanie grabbed her purse off of Justin’s dresser as she headed for the bedroom door.

“ Do you really have to go? " Justin questioned watching her intently.

“ I think I should, even though we’re still best friends it hurts inside, but this is for the best and we both agreed on that. " Stefanie answered pulling open the door.

“ Yeah I guess you’re right. I love you Stef. "

“ I love you too Justin. " Stefanie whispered before walking out the door shutting it quietly behind her.

~ Several Months Later ~

Stefanie stood in her dinning room staring out the French doors that looked out at the lush scenery below. Sighing contently she opened the doors and stepped out onto the deck that overlooked the pool and gardens. The sudden ringing of her phone inside pulled her out of her daze.

She quickly dashed into the house and picked up the phone.

“ Hello? "

“ Stef it’s Kay. " The voice beamed at the other end.

“ Hey girl, what up? " Stef smiled.

“ You’ll never believe who I just spotted! " Kayla squealed.

“ Who Kay? "

“ Justin’s new girl. "

Stefanie felt her face drain of its color. Had Justin really gotten over her that quickly? Then again a few months had passed, but still she felt that pang of jealousy in her.

“ Where? I wanna see this girl. " Stefanie said with a hint of sternness to her voice.

“ I knew you’d say that. Joey and I are at the coffee shop down a few blocks from your house. " Kayla informed.

“ Is Just- "

“ No he’s not. "

“ I’ll be there in ten. "

Stefanie hung up her phone and headed up the stairs towards her bedroom. She felt the need to show off a bit, letting this girl know what Justin had last before her. As she entered her room she quickly scanned her closet for a decent outfit. Grabbing a tight white tee with “ Diva " written on the front in rine stones and leather pants she shut the doors tothe closet.

As she changed into her newly chosen out fit she glanced at the picture of her and Justin she had framed on her nightstand. She was only going to check out what Justin found fit to be his girl, she knew she couldn’t cause trouble.

Stefanie slid on her boots and ran out of her room. She flew down her stairs, obviously in a hurry to see this girl, nearly tripping on her dog at the bottom.

“ God damn it Casey you nearly killed me. " She grumbled, but then softened into a smile as her boxer nuzzled her leg.

She ruffled the dogs head and shooed her away as she walked into the kitchen, swiping her keys off the table.

~*~*~*~*~

“ You know Stef isn’t going to be pleased with Justin’s girl. " Joey started as his gazed trailed back to the figure sitting a few tables from them.

“ Oh I know she won’t, but I have a feeling neither one of them will like each other. She’s gotta know about Stefanie by now I mean Justin shows her off to everyone. " Kayla answered staring down at her cappuccino.

“ Well the show is about to start. " Joey pointed out as he watched Stefanie’s black Wrangler pull into the parking lot and found a space.

Stefanie took a deep breath before getting out of her Jeep. She had no idea of what was to come, she had to remind herself that she was just there to look and keep her mouth shut, it wasn’t going to be easy but she promised herself she would.

As she pulled the door open a rush of warm air and the strong scent of coffee hit her face. Entering the shop her eyes quickly darted around searching for her friends, she immediately found them and walked over to them casually.

“ Record time there girl. " Kayla laughed moving over to make room.

“ I’m so damn apprehensive about this whole thing and it’s bugging me. " Stef sighed laughing nervously.

“ Hey Joey, how are you? " She asked trying to make conversation before jumping the gun.

“ Hi babe, I’m great. "

“ Good. "

Kayla sat and watching Stefanie’s expression. She looked nervous yet eager at the same time.

“ So..” Stefanie started looking from both Kayla to Joey.

“ Where’s she at? "

“ Three tables over, the blonde at the table by herself. " Kay pointed out going back to her conversation with Joey.

Stefanie raised her head to look over the room, her eyes landed upon a young girl no more than twenty, blonde wavy hair bouncing away as she talked away on her phone. She was dressed in a dangerously high black mini skirt and a tube top that was barely there.

“ Oh Christ. "

Stefanie sprung from her seat and headed toward the counter. She sat down on a stool and looked over the menu on the wall.

“ What do ya need Stef? "

Stefanie was a regular at this café. She came in every morning after her walks with KC.

“ Uh yeah can I have a French vanilla cappuccino to go? "

“ Sure I’ll have it for you in a few. " Jason smiled as he walked over to the table behind him and began preparing her drink.

“ What the hell am I doing here? " She grumbled to herself and she buried her face into her hands.

Stefanie sat patiently waiting when she felt someone near her; slowly she lifted her head and glanced over her shoulder. Her eyes were met by a familiar figure. There standing beside her was this girl, whatever her name was, who Justin had now claimed.

The girl smirked at Stefanie obviously knowing who she was, looking at her like she had her man.

“ Excuse me can I have a lemonade to go? My boyfriend is waiting for me at home, so I’m kinda in a hurry. " Her voice was high and overly sugared if almost on purpose.

Jason hurried over and gave Stefanie her drink.

“ Here ya go. "

Stefanie dug into her pocket and pulled out a five and attempted to hand it to him.

“ Forget it Stefanie, keep your money, you look like you need this so it’s on me. " Jason smiled looking over her features.

“ Thanks. "

Stefanie looked over at the girl next to her that was smiling triumphantly at her, and then left the shop. Once in her Jeep she rested her head on the steering wheel.

“ Shit that girl is everything Justin said he couldn’t stand, but yet he went out and got exactly that. I can’t believe him. "

Turning on the engine she headed back to her place.

~ Later on that night ~

“ My god Josh, I must have looked like such a fool. " Stefanie shouted into the phone.

“ Baby relax. It’s over with you’ll never have to see her again. " JC said trying to comfort his girlfriend.

“ Yeah right, I know Justin he’ll drag that tramp over here to see me, I know it. " She mumbled.

“ Stef just settle down, I’ll be over in an hour to keep you company, I need to hop in the shower first. Love you. "

“ Love you too. "

Stefanie clicked the off button to her phone and set it on her desk. She was so incredibly jealous of this girl yet she had no reason to be, she had JC now. Leaning back in her chair she stretched out, realizing she could use a shower herself, got up and headed into the bathroom.

Breathing in the steam that had now filled the room Stefanie stepped into the shower, letting the hot water beat down onto her back. She placed both hands onto the wall, letting her head hang down as her mind drifted off.

~ Flashback ~

“ I think we were truly made for each other Stef, I really do. You have every single quality in you that I love about a girl. " Justin said smiling as her ran his fingers gingerly over Stefanie’s cheek.

“ So I’m perfect huh? " Stefanie giggled.

“ Well I really can’t see myself with some girl that’s barely dressed, always thinking of herself and constantly gossiping away with her friends. " Justin laughed.

“ That’s good to hear, but you never know Justy. You could wind up with someone exactly like that. " Stef reasoned turning serious.

“ That’d be the day that I would have fallen out of love with you. " He whispered brushing his lips against hers softly.

~ End Flashback ~

“ Yeah well Justin that day has come. "

Stefanie had finished washing up and turned off the water. Only mere seconds later she heard her doorbell ringing. She quickly grabbed a towel off the rack and wrapped it around her dripping body. Stefanie hadn’t bothered with getting dressed figuring that it would be JC. She bounded down the steps and opened the door.

“ Justin? " She gasped.

“ Hey. "

“ I didn’t expect you to be on the other side of the door. " Stefanie mumbled inviting him in.

“ What is it a crime to come and see you now? " Justin questioned staring at Stefanie.

“ No I never said that, it’s just that you’ve got someone else to worry about now. "

“ So do you. "

“ And he happens to be on his way over here. " Stefanie started.

“ Listen Stef I just wanted to talk. " Justin pleaded.

“ Go on I’m sorry I’ve been rather edgy today. "

Justin took a deep breath before continuing on.

“ I just wanted to tell you that you were right. I ended up with exactly the type of girl I can’t stand. She’s nothing compared to you, every time we’re together I’d pretend she was you, your hold, touch, kisses, everything. "

“ I’m not going to say I told you so because I did a long time ago. " Stefanie sighed.

“ It’s like everything that she does wrong, baby you always did it right. I was a fool for not realizing what I had with you. " Justin whispered getting closer to Stefanie.

“ Justin I always stood by you, how could you not realize it? Yet you go on with this girl and totally waste your time? There is no way that her love could even compare to mine I mean look at her! I gave you everything I had, my heart, my soul, my mind. " She argued backing up.

“ What now you expect me to drop everything with Josh and come running back with open arms? Justin I’m sorry but that just isn’t going to happen! " Stefanie shouted getting infuriated.

“ Answer me this Stef. Didn’t you get with JC to get over me? Just like I got with this girl to get over you? "

Stefanie felt her knees giving way, Justin was right, she didn’t want to admit it but he was. Before she collapsed to the ground Justin had caught her in his arms.

“ Do you think you could possibly look me in the eyes and tell me that you don’t love me anymore? I love you Stefanie I never stopped. I only wanted to leave our relationship in fear of losing you all together. I wanted to make sure what I was feeling was real, I couldn’t lose you in terms as friends, and I wanted to save something. "

“ Justin I- "

Justin pulled her up to her feet cupping her face in his hand and looked into her now glazed over green eyes.

“ Tell me that you love me. " He whispered.

“ I love you. "

Stefanie took a breath of air in before letting her tears that were welling up inside out.

“ Shh…baby don’t cry. " Justin said holding Stefanie closer.

“ How can I not Justin? I had no idea of how much in love I was with you until now? All this stuff you just said and brought out into the open is making so much sense to me, and now I understand why all of this stuff happened. "

Neither one of them had noticed that the front door had opened. JC stood there watching the scene that had just played out before him. Smiling to himself he slowly back himself out of the house and back into his car.

He knew that Justin and Stefanie were going to get back together; it killed him to see how both of them yearned out for the other but refused to take it. JC only agreed to Stefanie’s idea of them dating to satisfy her need for Justin. He knew that every time that he touched her or even kissed her, it was Justin she was feeling.

Justin pulled Stefanie away from him and looked down at her. He softly brushed away a few of her curls away that were sticking to the side of her face, placing them behind her ear.

“ I don’t know what I’d do without you Stefanie. " Justin whispered before leaning down and placing his lips over hers gently kissing her passionately.
