Vampires were ranked with demons as the chief agents of sin, a philosophy that became official Church Doctrine in the Middle Ages. According to many vampirologists, Egypt or India was the birthplace of the vampire; but it has been postulated that Tibet is the real home of the vampire. Santorini is traditionally the most vampire-infested place in the world. Through biblical origins, forty days has been associated with the life span of the vampire, either becoming a vampire in forty days or only living as one for forty days.

In Greece and regions of the Balkans, a tradition holds that blue-eyed people would become vampires because of the scarcity of blue-eyed people in that region. In Ireland, blue- or gray-eyed people were said to be able to see ghosts. A Greek belief is that red hair is an indication that an individual is a vampire and is joined often with blue-eyes, another vampiric attribute.
